I have to buy a DVD to get the hell outa the Columbia House DVD club. They have TWO versions of Saving Private Ryan.. both say special edition, both say limited edition, both are widescreen, both say enhanced, both say 1998.

One has DTS in parenthesis at the end of the title (DTS), the other has (WS) at the end of the title, but neither lists DTS as one of the encoding schemes... in fact, I can't find a difference between the two listings, yet CH maintains two.

I'm going to call them, but if ANYONE has any information on this, if you've heard one is better, anything at all, and if you can reply within the next hour or so, please do (deadline around 3:30-4pm CST). I'm going to order one of them....

Thanks.

Edit: Amazon shows two, also.. one has DTS, one has a special behind-the-scenes featurette.... I'm not sure I own, yet, a DVD with DTS.. but that featurette could be good... hmmmm...

Opinions welcome. Knowing this crowd, let me specify.. opinions on these two versions, welcome.

I read reviews that the DTS version is much better soundwise than the DD version (I have the DD version). Can anyone verify this? Would it be worth an "upgrade" to the DTS version?

The DTS version slams the DD version into the sand of Omaha Beach.

I've heard both. Sound effects, bass clarity and power - no comparison.

It's like the difference on U-571 between DTS and DD.

Get the DTS version - all the way - no brainer. It's one of my best demo DVDs.

Thanks, Doc. Coming from the bass specialist, I'll take your word for it. Now if only I can sell my DD version....

It's a good thing that both sound formats, when available, are now typically on the same disc for new releases!

The DTS version hands down slams the DD version.

The DTS version does not include a featurette due to space constraints on the disc that the DD version has. The DTS soundtrack takes up alot more space than does the DD version.

    Get the DTS version!!!

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'll save up for the DTS version, but Band of Brothers is next on my list, and as you know that one will take righteous bucks.

You cannot go wrong with B.O.B. I found it superior to SPR. Dont get me wrong I loved Ryan, but there is so much more emotion in Band of Brothers. And the DTS soundtrack is very well done.

10 hours gets you a LOT of character development time. Awesome series. HIGHLY recommended. Cancel your newspaper, cut back to basic cable, and cut your porno site credit cards in half - whatever it takes to buy that series.

    This is killer.

...and after renting BoB, I agree.

    Doc,

Dug up your quote from the archives. I finally bought Band of Brothers today after a VERY long wait. Just watched Episode 1 - awesome, even though I had rented the series previously.

Hey, any opinion(s) regarding how the DTS sound compares between BoB and Saving Private Ryan? Which movie gets the vote for better DTS sound? Just curious, as I only have the DD version of SPR. How about the DD for each? Anybody?

SPR in DTS has better sound. More enveloping and better use of surround channels and also stronger bass.

I had to up the sub a few clicks on Bastogne to get the same power as SPR on the big mortar hits.

With that said, BOB is not sub par at all - SPR is just better.
