I need help with speaker set up. Just upgraded my receiver to an Onkyo 606. I would like to add the additional two speakers, but my problem is the set up. I currently have my rear speakers directly behind me with no space, the sitting is right up against the rear wall. All of my current speakers are boston accoustics and I would like to add the OWM3's. Is it required to have spacing between the sitting area and the rears? Would it make sense to add the additional two speakers and get the full affect? Would love to upgrade but placement may be a problem.

Space isn't a necessity if isn't a possibility IMO. However if you have space restraints, it won't benefit you much to upgrade to a 7.1 from a 5.1. I know it is the nature of the beast in all of us to upgrade, so if you feel the need to then the only thing that is going to soothe that itch is to upgrade. I have a 7.1 receiver (806) and only run 5.1 because of similar room size restraints. As far as speaker layout THX has a good one, I have enclosed a link. One note, that according to THX's site in a 5.1 system the surrounds are supposed to be to your left and right, not behind you. The speakers don't appear behind you until you move up to 7.1. Happy listening and welcome to Club Polk.

Thanks for the quick response. You are correct, I had the itch to upgrade to 7.1. The 5.1 setup is working just fine for my size room.

    I tried a 7.1 setup.....
For my size it was overkill. 10x15
I have my 6.1 all set and it sounds pretty damn sweet.
*Actually it's a 5.1 for now cuz I've yet to hookup a #6 just yet*

IMHO you hafta have a pretty good size room to appreciate a 7.1 or better setup. EX: 20x20 or larger

You are right. I have a 19x15 room and the 5.1 works just fine. You know us audiophiles, just want more.

Bigger speakers and a bigger sub always works.
Unless your like me and have very limited space.
    (Sniffle.....I miss my 10b's)

I do have it in mind to get a set of RT25i's or RT35i's and make my RT15i's sats.

Something I learned over the years.....speakers are what make a system not the receiver.
A mediocre receiver can sound as good as a 1k+ receiver with some real nice speakers and nice thumper! :D

Thats not entirely true. A $400 receiver with $5000 speakers or even my speakers won't do them justice and probably would do them more harm if anything. Great speakers need great electronics to sing.

Yes , it is the beast in us to which is forcing upgrade to 7.1 . I am running 5.1 setup with monitor (60,30,cs2,psw125) and quite happy. But after upgrading to Onkyo 705 , I don't think that anything ,other adding two monitor 30 for rear, is going to satisfy me.
