Sigh...giving up my RTA-12Bs

Well, it is a sad day here in Madison. I was doing OK until I thought to google RTA-12 and found this forum. Various accolades to the warm sweet sound of my RTA-12Bs had me momentarily second guessing my decision to send them packing. Yes, I'll admit they have fallen victim to a way-too-low WAF (wife approval factor), and to my own desire to reduce the space given up to audio equipment in my modest home. Still, I've got too many great memories of fabulous parties kicked into high gear by the twist of the volume button on my NAD to not wax nostalgic at the thought of parting with them. So, thanks guys for reminding me of the day in 1983 I brought them home to my 9 x 15 studio apartment, and the day about a year later when I moved into 1000 square feet and actually got to hear them, and all the days after that when they introduced me to lots and lots of great music! I'll probably be listing them on Craigslist-Madison (WI) unless one of the collectors out there wants to get back to me and promise to make a good home for them. They are almost perfect; the result I suppose of not having been moved from their current location since 1987. Their "hats" are intact and un-sagging, both covers are still in place, and even the original and very quaint Instruction Manual is still in its folder. I may even have a small supply of those 3/4 amp fuses that protect the tweeters.

Thanks, Tom

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear of your dilemma. However, we do have rules for selling here.

    Thank you for your understanding.

My dad had a pair of the originals as well & absolutely loved them. He passed away about a month ago and so I'll probably be offering them - maybe even for free? - to a Polkie who's local to the LA area.

    Welcome to Club Polk.

This is one of the best written violations of club rules I have read. I certainly hope you stick around. We could use more articulate rule breakers around here. :p

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I am local to LA area and interested to pay a fair value for your late father's gear. Please let me know what is available.

    Thanks

I have a pair of 12 B's in mint condition bought used recently. (they were babied by original user). They replaced my SDA 2's in my HT setup which are now in another room not being used that much. I only use them for movies and sometimes to listen to 7 channel stereo. What was the design idea behind the top mounted tweeter?

RTA-Real Time Alignment. Loosely described it's mounting the drivers and compensating the x-over so all (well most) frequencies reach you ears at approximately the same time. This allows for our ears and brains to more accurately pinpoint sounds within the soundstage.

Real Time Alignment takes a lot of effort and knowledge to be done correctly and their are many many speaker manufacturers who abuse this term.

The RTA 12's were *truly* time aligned and they are mirror imaged meaning they have a specific L and R speaker and need to be set-up that way.

Hope this helps as it's the abbreviated description of Real Time Alignment. Google has lots to say on the subject if you are interested.
