Variable Loudness knob

I have an older Denon 2 channel receiver and it has a variable loudness control knob. At the 12 O'clock position is the word Flat. To turn the loudness down you turn the knob counterclockwise. My question is should I leave it at the flat position or somewhere in between flat and "off"
