I'm sure most of you remember this movie. It's one of my favorite action flicks of all time.

I already have it on Laser Disc but decided to try out the blu ray version

At first I was a little dissapointed when I saw the sound under "features" on the back cover. It said LPCM (more on this later). But I still decided to get it. I was hoping it would be remastered in Dolby HD or DTS MA.

So here's my quickie sound & picture review....

The picture is fantastic for a film from the mid-late 90's. Picture is crisp, clean and brightness level is excellent. The dark parts look great, didn't notice any blacks turning into dark gray or anything like that. It looks great in 1080p.
Ok, now for the negative.... As good and sharp as it is, there are still a few things that make the film look dated. The picture is not as sharp as newer films on blu ray but quite close. The colors are also not as good as newer films. The colors are not as vivid as other BD discs I have, but the brightness/contrast is excellent, so it makes up for the slightly pale look. So in the end it shouldn't bother you much at all.

Picture 8/10

The sound is where the big surprise is. When I checked the audio output in the display, it was pumping out as much numbers as DTS-MA (>4.5mbps). I've watched the Laser Disc many times, so I remember the sound very well. This movie will satisfy all the bass freaks out there. The soundtrack is agressive with amazing dynamics. The rears get excellent work out during action scenes and still quite active during quiet passages adding ambiance. The music sounds super and no dialog or gun shots is ever lost in the mix.
The only complaint I have about the sound is that the music is synthesized, but no biggie, it has great dynamics and clarity and really get the adrenaline pumping. There are times in the film when a lot of bass was added into parts that didn't need it to be so loud. A few parts that comes to mind would be the car chase scene and the scene when the marines traveled underwater to get into The Rock. But again, this is an action movie so I can't really complain there. So overall, the sound is quite spectacular.

Sound 9/10

So that's it for my short review. Just want to give a heads up to those who really like this movie. Give the blu ray version a try. I'm sure you'll love it even more.
