You don't need to rework the crossovers, but it will make an improvement. In fact, I heard a pair of SRS 2's last night, one with a rebuilt crossover, the other stock. The rebuild sounded much better.

I didn't mean to imply that I determined that the XOs need to be upgraded, merely saying that that's the generally accepted view of the veterans here, as I understood it! There're much better cheesesteaks in Phila. than Pat's, but Pat's is the most fun. Have a happy and safe trip!!

Thanks guys. I understood there was no judgment made.

I did a lot of google searching today and I've seen numerous articles that state caps can physically dry out over time (perhaps 10 years) if driven at voltages higher than 75% of their maximum rated working voltage.

This a "re-ignited after many years off" and badly needed hobby as my job stresses me out, so I don't mind a bit of honest debate and ensuing experimentation.

I'm looking forward to a cheesesteak too, and wish we had more time, but the mission is to get those bad boys home and start the analysis / restoration process!

The SRS 2's are in place!

    The good:

-- The SRS 2 is is the model I really wanted 21 years ago when I purchased my 2B's due to having less cash at the time.
-- I rented a refrigerator dolly and wrapped each speaker with cardboard which allowed easy and unblemished movement down steps from the pickup point and down more into my man cave. These real wood (oak) cabinets, grilles, etc. are in really NICE Condition !! I learned seller was the original owner (a doctor) and the cabinets were professionally moved in to his home, and never moved again from the spot until I picked them up.
-- Doc is a really nice guy who is retiring and moving to a small condo.
-- Cheese Steaks at Pat's in 32 degree sunshine ( I guess "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" :-).

    The bad:

-- 900 miles round trip from Northeastern Ohio to Philly in 15 hours is rough on a 50 yr old.
-- No Blade / Blade Interconnect. I see $35 buy it now on ebay, and have emailed Helen at Polk for their price
-- The "pushing gently on the passive subwoofer" yields one of the main drivers is scratchy and 2 of the dimensional drivers are locked up. I haven't popped them out yet to see if these are all MW6509's, or the MW6510/MW6511 split, but MOST LIKELY MW6509's as the blade / blade interconnect would indicate.

I wanted to put the first upgrade dollars into new silk tweeters, but am now debating whether to spend $48 NEW from Polk for the 3 blown 6-1/2 inchers I need, or ask the group for help on a few used ones. I'll make sure these are 6509's in a bit.

I just powered the SRS2's up and am ASTOUNDED at how well they sound, even with 2 drivers contributing 0% to the mix.

I verified that all eight 6-1/2" MW drivers are the original MW6509, built Dec 05, 1986 and put into service on January 03, 1987. I need 3 and will buy 4 for a spare.

Does anyone in the group have some decent MW6509's for sale? I will also check the buy/sell posts.

    Congrats on your new speakers:)
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Just curious. Did you check the drivers before you packed them up, or after you got them home and setup? If they had locked drivers in the seller's home, I'd be asking for some money back. 3 out of 8 drivers bad is a pretty significant flaw.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

I had the owner gently depress each passive sub before finalizing payment and was told 2 (dimensional) drivers on the left speaker "did not move uniformly". The one (dimensional) on the right speaker that moves but sounds a little scratchy to me was not disclosed (but it does move).

I did not inspect prior to shipment as the above was disclosed.

I used a 4' X 8' sheet of luan plywood to facilitate sliding the speakers in on top of a 5' x 8' sheet of 1-1/2" foam rubber to provide a cushy ride in the back of my minivan. The sides of the speakers touched the foam rubber curved up the sides and I wedged more foam between the center side so they did not move fore and aft at all. I contemplated hauling face down as discussed in an earlier part of this thread (post #8), but ended up (maybe wrongly) rethinking that pumping loud music through these puppies must be at least as bad as driving on the interstate. We hit no bumps of consequence and made to panic stops.

The owner said he always had a consultant come in to do his hookups, and was currently using them as Front Left/Right for a flatscreen with the interconnect gone missing. There was evidence that a couple of drivers had been swapped around so that the 4 main "stereo" 6-1/2" drivers were the ones that were working properly, and the dimensional drivers were not, so my guess is the problem was a result of something in the past, but he didn't say what. The cabinets are perfect so it must have been amp related.

I'm surpirsed they sound so good in this state (using my compatible 2B interconnect), but decide to stop using them until rebuilt. I'm not sure what kind of load the bad drivers are presenting to the crossover network and my NAD 7600 (which may not care, but I'm being careful just in case).

If no one offers any vintage 6509's by the end of the week, I'm going to dig deeper into the pockets and buy 4 new 6509 plus 4 silk domes. My thoughts are to replace the 4 main 6.5's and use the vintage in the dimensional positions. I'll eventually replace them as funds are available.
