Say a prayer...

A friend of mine passed away last week. He was a Catholic priest and I've known him since...well, as long as I can remember. Probably about 30 years. He was a big influence in my life and he was the pastor of the church my mother worked at. He was everything from a pastor/spiritual leader to a role model and as I grew older, a friend. He was a golfing buddy and a grandfather and a fixture in my family for many years. So much so that we all called him Dziadz which is a polish word for grandfather.
He was quite sick when he passed and my mother expended a great deal of time taking care of him as he grew worse because his family lives in Ohio and western PA and were unable to care for him from so far away. It was a shame to see him degrade and I know it torn him up more than anyone else.
But all in all, he was a very good man and those that knew him, we very blessed to have known him. He was a model of what a priest should be and he is very highly regarded throughout the diocese, not just the parish.
I can't cry for my friend because I know he is in a better place, without a doubt. I am glad his suffering is over. I miss him and Christmas this year won't seem quite as bright and festive. But life goes on and he wouldn't want anyone to languish over his passing. It was his time and he was called home.
So godspeed Dziadz. He always ended mass in the same way:
"May the Lord bless you and keep you, may His face shine upon you and be gracious to you and may He look upon you with kindness, all the days of your life."
He will be laid to rest today around noon.
Say a prayer, lift a dry martini in his honor 'cause we lost a great one.

That's a great story, Jstas. I have been lucky enough to meet a few heroes who might remind you of Dziadz if you met them. These are the kind of people that give us all hope when there seems to be such a lack of it sometimes, who restore our faith in our world because of the way they see it. I will remember him when I next lift my glass ...Alea jacta est!
