The 2008-2009 race started about two weeks ago with the highlights of the first leg from Alicante, Spain to Cape Town, South Africa shown today. I believe most PBS stations will show the half hour segment every Saturday from now until the race ends next June or you can follow it online at www.vortv.org or at http://www.volvooceanrace.org/

The 70 meter sailboats are like Formula One auto racing, on the absolute cutting edge. They are capable of speeds in excess of 45 knots, which on water is hauling ****! Hell, most power boats can't go that fast.

I had the pleasure of seeing these boats race, up close and personal, the last time around...WOW!!!

Awesome racing. Tough, tough accommodations on these boats and the work to sail these boats would put the best athlete to the test. Look on you tube and you can see some amazing action in the Southern Ocean. A sail boat going 30+ knots with a rooster tail shooting up behind it just does not look normal, but cool.

I also was on my boat at the finish line in front of Fort McHenry for the end of the race leg from Fort Lauderdale Fl. and on my boat at the starting line for the race to England just North of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in IIRC 1998. They are awesome Boats to see sailing up close. I also renovated Gary Jobsons condo in Baltimore and he let me see some of the footage that he took while covering the race.

Like Jesse said F1 on the water. No Max and No Bernie:D
