Kenwood KR 9600 SQ

I recently cleaned up all the static in the switches on my Kenwood KR 9600 receiver and hooked it up to my 1.2 TL's. Holy sh-t. It sounds phenomenal. At approx 30 watts output the walls are shaking in my basement. SQ is outstanding...already said that. WTF is going on here? 30 watts and no telling what the SPL is...are the watt meters accurate? I've never run vintage SS on these speaks before. Thoughts anyone?

I would guess it's putting out a lot more than that. That particular Kenwood Receiver is considered a true power house. Here are the rated specs from thevintageknob.org:
http://www.thevintageknob.org/KENWOOD/KR9600/KR9600-specs.html
It's rated at min rms 160wpc 8 ohms @ 0.08% distortion. I have a vintage Kenwood KA-9100 integrated that kicks serious butt as well. Those old Kenwoods really rocked the Casba. More info here:

I won this on Ebay (original owner) for a song and avoided running it because of the static in the switches/knobs. The receiver is in top/mint condition and came with original owner's manual. Turning it upside down and removing cover gained access to the pots. Sprayed em' and music heaven.SDA SRS 2.3TL's

That's a nice receiver. I've got it's little bro, the KR-4600. Bought it new in 1977. Still going strong. Enjoy.

Congrats! The 9600 is an under-rated receiver that has an excellent tuner as well. I've had mine since it was new in '78 and it still performs well. It was the receiver I used with my 1.2's when I bought them new in '88 and it did a great job with them. The only drawback to this receiver is that is uses power packs that are no longer made and must be obtained from a donor receiver if they ever go out. So treat her gently and ENJOY!Main System: Polk SDA SRS 1.2 Speakers, Sunfire Signature 600~two Amp, Carver C-16 Preamp, Carver TX-11b Tuner, Marantz 6350Q TT, Philips CDR-775 Recorder, Teac V-707RX Cassette Deck, Signal Cable Double Run Speaker Cable
Upstairs Den: Marantz 2325 Receiver, Marantz 5220 Cassette Deck, Marantz HD-880 Speakers, Marantz 6370Q TT
Exercise (Kabuki speaker) Room: Kenwood KR-9600 Receiver, Pioneer CS-99a Speakers, Sansui SP-X9000 Speakers (not pretty, but LOUD! ) -

Yes, I heard about the power packs not being made anymore for this receiver which was another reason I had been avoiding using it. I'll definitely be conservative with the volume knob. Thanks.SDA SRS 2.3TL's
