Hello, I am the proud new owner of the rta 11tl's. Got them off ebay for about 200 bucks. Question is one of the mid drivers does not seem to be moving as much as the other three. There is still sound coming out, just not sure why it's not moving as much. Any thoughts would be great, thanks

I was looking at that set on ebay. They came from Colorado right? It sounds like one of your drivers are frozen. I bought a set of SDA-1c's from the guy and I have to replace to of the drivers because they are frozen. I had to call Polk and get replacements. You might be in the same boat. If you are call polk and say you are a club member and you can get 20% off. How do the speakers sound. They looked nice from the pictures.Polk HT system 1: LSIC, LSI25 mains, LSI F/X rears, Lsi F/X rear centers,

Congrats! You will enjoy these speakers. Which driver is not moving as much? I am not sure how familiar you are with the RTA11TLs but the lower 2 are actually passive radiators and their movement may be different as they are individually tuned to different frequencies.

Yeah these are the ones that came from Colorado. They are in pretty nice shape. It is one of the midranges not the passive radiators. any idea what a replacement might cost? What causes the driver to freeze? thanks I do like the speakers a lot.

If the voice coil warps it will rub against the magnet pole piece and prevent free movement. I believe that Polk has a replacement available. Call their parts department (Helen) and mention that you are a Club Polk member and they will give you a discount. The original part number is MW6510.

Did a little checking and turned out there is no sound coming out of the driver so I guess I definetly need a new one. The same driver on the other speaker makes a popping noise sometimes at higher volumes almost like it is bottoming out or something. Should I just replace that one as well? thanks

If you lightly and evenly press on the cones, do they move freely? If there is scratching noise, then the voice coil is likely warped. For the one that has no sound, try disconnecting that driver and hooking up another driver to see if there is any sound. If not, it may be the crossover. Mine had some bad solder connections. If there is sound, take the suspected driver and connect it directly to a sound source to see if it works.
If both drivers are bad, I would suspect that the speaker was overdriven and the voice coils damaged.
Are the tweeters working OK?

the cones do seem to be moving freely. I took the driver out that I thought wasn't working and hooked it straight up to the receiver and still no sound. The tweeters do seem to be working fine. The other driver doesn't seem to have and vocals coming out, so I will probably just replace both of them. I called polk and they are 48 bucks each with the 20 percent off. I am powering these with a yamaha 5960 (115w/c). Would it be a good idea to run a preamp with this receiver? thanks

You mean amplifier not preamp. Yes, more power is always better. I always recommend 200wpc since this is enough to make almost any speaker operate to their full potential.
Keep you eyes on the flea market here for a good deal. But also check out Audiogon for a used... Parasound, Sunfire, Adcom, B & K, Rotel etc. Or check out Outlaw Audio & Emotiva for good bang for the buck amps.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
sorry still kind of new to the scene. What is the difference between an external amp and a preamp?
-
A receiver is a preamp and amplifier in one unit. The preamp can provide your source switching, volume control, and digital to analog conversion with channel splitting. The amplifier takes the signal from the source via the preamp and amplifies that to supply the speakers.

So whats a good external amp to run with these speakers?

i have a sunfire theater grand 1 processor and i run my rta 11t's with a carver a 760c at around 360 wpc. being as these are the rta 11t and not the rta 11tl i have the sl 2000 tweeter you probably have the sl2500 or the sl3000 in any event the sl2000 had some issues and i bought the crossover upgrade kit from ray17760 on ebay. i will tell you these speakers have become my absolute favorites even above the rti150 polks just because of the clarity. unfortunately the upgrade is not for the rta 11tl. but if you put enough CLEAN power they will soon be your favorites. i do have to say i enjoy my magnaplanars tympani's 1b better but i don't have enough juice to strech their legs yet. when i do i will move them to the front with the rta11t's second -
Getting my 11TLs in a few weeks. Can't wait
