Preamp down! This is not a drill! I repeat, this is not a drill!

My preamp is toast. I was putting new batteries in it and somehow made contact where I shouldn't have. I don't know what the eff I did wrong.
Visible Damage Assessment:
1. Completely blew off point-solder from battery 3 to circuit board.
2. Battery is now melted to positive connector.
3. Visible flecks and material flaking out of circuit board.
4. Fuses are blown.
5. Tubes are black.
6. Black soot on battery.
How do you think the rest of this thing survived? The prognosis looks grim.
The good news is that I made a call to Gary Dodd and he seems to think its now big deal and will fix it in 20 minutes.

He's referring to a preamp I purchased from him back in the day that was also battery powered. And also blew something . . .
This is Not the same. Yours never worked out of the box. I hope you're not insinuating that I busted the preamp you sent me and then claimed it was your fault. I have no problem taking responsibility for my own screw-ups.
The real issue was that the new batteries mailed to me by Mr. Dodd were 2 millimeters out of spec because they came from a new manufacturer and were on the high side of tolerance. He gave me some directions on how to adjust the Dodd to allow the batteries to fit in the chassis. He warned me this might happen . . . -
I wasn't insinuating that at all but it's an awfully funny coincidence.
The Welborne Labs worked when it left here but unfortunately not after it arrived at your residence. I do recall that I took care of everything from start to finish, regardless of what I believed....didn't I?CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Yes sir you did. Without question. (also not insuating anything on my end.)
Sorry if I snapped. I'm just tired and irritated. -
I wish that didn't happen to you Mike, seriously.

Ouch... didn't mean to open a whole can of worms here.
I'm wondering if the new batteries had the terminals improperly labeled or something. Sounds like something shorted out hard.Ludicrous gibs! -
No worms Noah.... everything was worked out and everyone was happy in the end. He moved onto bigger and better gear as well.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Sorry no pics. I can't bare to look at it anymore. I feel like I lost my right nut. I got it all boxed and ready to be shipped tomorrow morning. Gary has been amazing. His attitude really put me at ease. For a minute I thought I just torched $2,500. Whew . . .

Its cool this is getting taken care of.
Now stick with just playing with live AC. DC is just too dangerous for you____________________

Yeah, that's just not going to happen. Dodd's customer service coupled with the fact that I'd be hard pressed to find a preamp in this range that sounds as good is a no-brainer. -
Got my Preamp back today!!!!!!!!! Awww yeah, this thing sounds good.

WONDERFUL! Now, don't fry it again.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin:
