    Thanks for the heads up.

They have some other good deals, too, including a CSi25 center channel for 41.99. I wish they had a broader selection of floor standing speakers.

and the monitor 70s are 229 each.
Both are a few bucks cheaper than I paid, oh well. I think we are going to see some deflation pretty soon.

I think RTi8 at $150+20shipping is a better deal than Monitor 70 for $200, right? Fry's had RTi8s on clearance at that price a couple weeks ago.

I've not listened to the RTi 8s. But the 70s have a nice sound for medium and low volume listening. I would think the RTi 8 with only two 6.5 in. drivers would have less of a full frequency range than the Monitor 70 where two drivers are midrange and two are bass.

I have both in different rooms. I prefer the RTi8 for their better detailed sound. If you listen to classical music you would definitely prefer the RTi8's, but if you listen to heavy metal, then the Monitor 70's will sound great.
No heavy metal at all here, very minimal rock even.

Mostly I listen to smooth jazz, piano jazz, orchestral jazz, and some pop vocals when the backup is great instrumental. For example, current tastes run from sax and horns to more energetic funky jazz with a hint of fusion, plus a bit of pop female vocals. For example -- Paul Shilts - Headboppin and Jigsaw Life; Jeff Lorber - Kickin It and Flipside; Najee - Songs in the Key of Life; Rick Braun - RnR and Esperanto; Keiko Matsui - Moyo and Best of; Hiroshima - Little Tokyo; Marc Antoine - Hi Lo Split; Brian Bromberg - Downright Upright; Kenny G - Romantic Melodies and Duets; Best of Earth Wind and Fire; Best of Down to the Bone; Essential Stevie Wonder; Outernational Sound; Hardcastle 5; Eugene Groove - Born to Groove; more energetic Spiro Gyra; Tom Scott - Reed My Lips; and recent Celine Dion.

Based on your description, I'd say that to me, the overall detail of speakers is pretty important, but so is the strength of upper bass, especially with the sax-focused jazz. I also have a pair of Monitor 60s and their midrange is a tiny bit better than the Monitor 70s, I think because a 6.5 inch driver is best at lower frequencies compared to the 5.25 inch driver in the 60s.

Nevertheless, at lower volumes I get pretty good detail out of my current speakers as long as I shunt most of the low bass to the Epik 350 W sub instead of the mains and keep the volume reasonably low.

Have you listened to the RTi8's?
No, but looking back I should've listened to them before making speaker purchases over the last year and a half. At this point it doesn't make financial sense since I have four pairs of speakers in various rooms of the house (Mon. 70s+ Epik sub; Mon. 60s+Velo sub; Technics 15" 3-ways plus classic Model 10s in basement).

I guess I was enticed by the low mass market prices of the Monitor Series, and I mistakenly assumed the RTi 8s with half as many drivers were more of a HT-type speaker designed chiefly for 5.1 or 7.1. Maybe I was wrong and they would've been better for 2-channel.
