You'll do the best by leaving the HDMI directly to the TV (for the HD picture) and then connecting the optical out of the PS3 to one of the Optical Ins of the RMDS-1.

I agree with Eric, I am not familiar with the RMDS-1 except for it is a Polk Audio HTIB (Home Theater In A Box) I looked at the specs on the Polk website and it doesn't have HDMI in or out so your only option if you wanted the PS3 to be your HD source to view Blu-Ray's and what not on your TV, would be to (as Eric said) run your HDMI from the back of your PS3 to your HDMI 1 or HDMI 2 (assuming you have more than one input on your TV) on your TV and then run an optical cable from the back of your PS3 to the Optical IN on the back of your RMDS-1. Make sure you change the sound settings on your PS3 to output via optical because this is not the default sound setting for your PS3 out of the box. Also you will have to change the video settings too, since HDMI is also not the default setting for the PS3. It may or may not automatically detect it when you turn it on with the HDMI cable hooked up, but if it does it will prompt you to change the video settings and the audio settings at the same time. If not, you will have to turn on the PS3 and view it on the RGA video channel (Red, White and Yellow cables that are the default for PS3) and then go to the settings menu on the PS3 and change the video settings to output via HDMI. You will then have 35 seconds I believe to switch channels to your HDMI channel on your TV (HDMI 1 or HDMI 2 which ever one you hooked it up to on the back of your TV) and accept the new settings. If I remember correctly it will then ask you to verify your audio settings which is where you will change it to output via Optical. Whew, long drawn out answer, lol hopefully this helps. Also, let me be the first to say welcome to Club Polk.

Oh and of course you will need an optical cable in order to accomplish this. You can find them at Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart etc. for around $10-$15

thanks for all of your help but now i have a bigger problem, when i hooked it up it says error #2 and it makes a loud ticking sound(and no its not a bomb).before it made the ticking sound,no sound came out of the system so i unhooked it for 6 months until i bought another tv and tryed it again.

Are you the same guy that had a problem with the RMDS-1 in another post about ticking and error message #3? If so, sounds like maybe you got a bum unit and I would talk to polk about maybe a refund/exchange? Not sure what the error messages mean, did you look in the manual for the error messages and what they mean? I looked at the manual and there wasn't a guide to what the error messages mean, but there was a page of troubleshooting and a detailed setup guide you may want to check as well. Here is a link to the manual in case you don't have it anymore. Hope it helps.
