What to do with inline crossovers?

I got some new MMC 650's and they come with inline crossovers. I hooked them up to my speakers and hooked the crossovers to the wiring and then just threw them behind the door panel because I didn't know what to do with them. What are they used for? How are you supposed to set them up? and is just throwing them behind the door panel a bad thing?
