iPod question

I have tried the Apple support pages and even called their tech support for help - without any luck. When connected to my computer my iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes. I have done the "5 R's"; I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, emptied my temp directory and restarted, and cleaned up iTunes installer files on my computer. The iPod was working ok and appearing in iTunes but now just vanished! After talking with Apple tech support and going through various steps at correcting the problem to no avail my case was escalated to a higher tiered tech support person who advised me that my next option was to backup my system and reinstall Windows!! Seems like a very extreme solution, considering how did my iPod "just vanish" from iTunes. Anyone ever have this happen to them? Any advice or ideas??

If you can, test it on another computer that has iTunes to see if it shows up. If it does not then it's probably an issue with the iPod. If it does then it's probably an issue with your machine in which case you should try the format and reinstall before attempting any kind of hardware repair (which sounds unnecessary from what you've stated).
