I will third the Ferrari Dino. Just a beautiful car.

BMW 2002tii. Just a cool car that was a woof in sheeps clothing. BMW actually used old 2002 blocks to build F1 engines in the turbo era.

I'm going to have to go the other way on this one. I think everyone should own at least one car in the Pinto/Vega/Pacer category. All of the rest of the cars you purchase become that much better in comparison

I think most of you missed the point. I wasn't asking for dream cars and that seems to be most what y'all posted. I was asking for what do you think is a car that embodies the vision of a driver's car so perfectly that everyone should drive one just to see what the automotive nirvana is like.

I have my dream cars just like everyone else but my dream cars appeal to me for my reasons.

But like what specific car out there has that just perfect balance of characteristics that makes it a shining example of its kind? So special that everyone should drive one just to see for themselves.

Early to mid 90's Corvette. Good performance, and there's always a
reasonably priced one out there. Other cars may be better, but anyone
here could buy one of these. And have fun. Screw a test drive. Go for
something you can park in the driveway. They are hugely ignored
by most people , who are busy chasing the latest models. Great bang for the buck.

I truly believe everyone at some point in their life should own a VW GTi. No they aren't all that masculine, they don't have sexy lines. But talk about a practical everyday car that can haul just about anything and also entertain on the back twisty's and point and shoot in everyday traffic. German engineering and feel. There is something about a German bred auto that connects you to the driving experience. Something you just don't get in a Japanese or American car. Kind of like the Italians only different

The fun one to drive is the VR6. Sure the 4cyl GTi lost it's way for a while. The MKII with the 16V is a blast to drive as is the VR6 or the 1.8T and now the 2.0 FSI. The DSG paddle shift tranny is sublime and really is the next best thing to Ferrari's F1 shifter....................no **** I'm not kidding.

Well if you are going to mention budget Vettes you can't leave out the 84 on up years. While not the performer of the 90's you can get a Vette with good handling, and good power for real cheap. I spent a good amount of time behind the wheel of a 71 350 4 speed, and while pretty fast the handling could get real scary when pushed hard on the twisty roads. To me cool factor went out from 73-83 like the pinto looking mustang II's.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.

Everybody needs to own a small British Sports car at least once in their life. Fun to drive and a pain in the **** to live with. Everyone needs to experience one of them. Here are a few:

Or you could get a Japanese equivalent. As fun, and easier to live with. Something like the 1967-70 Datsun Fairlady (Datsun 2000).

Shouldn't everyone have one of those Detroit lub lub lub machines, at least once? It's a completely American experience that nobody else has ever tried to imitate AFIK. Something to drive for a day out on the PCH out here.

No Sami. You are totally missing the point. The PIA aspect is part of the total experience... like not knowing when the Lucas electronics were going to fail.

    I don't need to anymore. I had an early 80's Honda already and a '98 Audi... :(

But I agree, everyone should experience at least one very unreliable car.

While stationed at Fort Wegotcha,AZ in my last year of service I got to see a brand new Porsche 928S4 whenever I had flag detail. Well 20 years later I found I finally could afford one, just like my SDA-SRS Towers, I have to say like these old Polks it needed some minor upgrades but man was this car ahead of its time! If you ever get a chance to drive one that is a 5-speed in good mechanical condition do it!:D:D:D:D

    Draco,

That is a really nice looking Porsche... However, I'd black out the plate or remove that pic.

What exactly can one do with a plate number? I mean... I drive down the road every day and my plate is perfectly visible. I never understood the paranoia about that kind of thing.

Exactly. Funny thing happened while I was playing online poker...this guy had his kids picture as his avatar. Well, these two stooges said he was putting his family in danger in case someone got mad at him in case he won their money (it was on max. $20 buy-in table with 5c/10c blinds). Of course we were then idiots when we didn't agree. :D

I have an agreement with Draco, the bulldogge, that what ever comes inside the fence without me or my family is his to deal with as he see's fit. We've had this plate debate over on rennlist for years and I don't see the point.

Like a lot of the older members here I have had the luck to have owned and driven a lot of the cars that fit this catagory.
    53 MGTD
    58 MGA
    66 gto convertible
66 Galaxie 7 litre still own
    67 chevelle 396
    68 Hemi roadrunner
    72 olds 442 convertible
72 429 scj Torino Cobra still own
    74TR6
68 Buick Wildcat convertible still own
and a 2004 Superformance Cobra replica.

I can say hands down the most fun to drive is the Cobra replica. It satisfies all of the criteria that makes a car great fun.It is a dream car and it's performance is matched by only a few supercars, it's a great crowd pleaser and always is welcome in any driveway.

The Triumphs you posted were a TR6 and a TR3 wide mouth.

Here is me with my TR7. There is something about the British Roadsters for sure. I just put mine back in the garage after running an errand tonight.:D

My biggest POS car was a 1982 Mecury Lynx(twin to Ford Escort).
It had the high output 1.6l motor. It ate carbs and ignitions.
It had the same 2 barrel progressive carb VW rabbits used to come with.
The VWs ate carbs, too. IT's why VW went to fuel injection.
The Lynx never ran right when it was cold. I replaced it with a used
    LTD. What a difference!

Not a great car...but an incredible ride for a trip Maine-Florida, or NYC-L.A. The ultimate BOAT-mobile the Lincoln Towncar. Not the greatest handling, mileage, or even power. But your butt will thank you after 1500 miles.

I rented these more than once for road trips in the late 80s/eary 90s.

I saw one of these about 10 years ago and fell in love with volvo right away.........

I have owned a couple of volvos........a 1989 240 wagon, which I loved to drive, and a 1968 142 coupe that I started as a restoration/performance car project and moved to DC before finishing.

Right now I ride one of my 5 bicycles to go everywhere

I had a '63 Bonneville that was cherry. "The Chief". I would like to have that car again.

My friend Joe had one of those Lotus jobs, and we used to drive it down the closed runways at Floyd Bennett Field (the place where the airplanes that shot King Kong off The Empire State Bldg. came from).

The English sports cars were/are finicky vehicles. I had a '67 Midget that I do not have many fond memories of.
