DVD Ripping Software

It's been a year or two since I've copied any of my movies down to my PC, mostly due to space constraints. However, I now have roughly 4 terabytes of space to play with, so it's time to get caught up on copying my standard DVDs over to my media server. I've acquired roughly 100 new DVDs since my last backup, so I've got a bit of work ahead of me.

Last time I was copying movies over, I was using DVDFab Decrypter to rip the DVD to my PC and DVD-Rebuilder to compress the dvd. I'm not sure if I'll be compressing since space isn't an issue any longer, but would like to have that option available.

So having said all that, what are my best options today for ripping and compressing a DVD? I won't be making copies, so I'm not concerned with burning software, but what's my best bet for ripping and compressing?

I liked DVD Fab Decrypter, but it's no longer free as it now comes with all the compression stuff built in. Is there a good free ripper out there?

I don't much care for the transcoding type compression programs, and I assume that's what built into most of the programs, including DVDFAB? Is DVD-RB still my best and cheapest option for a true encoding program?

Thanks

You can still get DVD Fab for free, it jsut takes a bit of searching.

Here's the link to the download.

I tried that version, but when I open the program it has a 30 day trial note. Now that I look closer maybe that only applirs to the other versions...

Another option is DVD43, which will defeat the copy protection for you. It doesn't do the ripping but sometimes is helpful.

Here you go. I love anyDVD, and Clone DVD. Trials are free, and the price to buy is well worth it.

I've used AnyDVD before and it worked well, but I prefer programs that don't run in the background. Does CloneDVD do the compression, or how would that be accomplished?

DVD Shrink is also a transcoding program, correct?

There are dozens of dvd copy tools that are available, but they all use transcoding to compress. Am I the only one who cares about a true encoding program for compression vs a transcoding program?

I'm pretty sure it does compression, plus you can get the size down by dropping crap you don't need (you have 5.1, don't care about the prologic soundtrack, etc).

No, don't think it's ever done that. It just does a simple shrinkdown to DVD5 size, although it allows you to delete menus, extras, crap like dat.

The DVDFab bobman linked you to is indeed free. However, it also comes with Platinum and Gold versions which have a 30-day free trial. Those versions are, of course, more powerful and allow you to compress the DVD to allow burning to a DVD5. However, that compressing option is NOT available in the free version.

I've been using DVD Fab for the last few days, and I really like it. I'm thinking I may very well end up buying it.

I'm not looking to change format, only compress.

Most of the programs out there, including DVDShrink, CloneDVD, DVDFab, and almost anything else you find use transcoding (I believe it may technically be called compressed domain transcoding). It's much simpler than encoding. Rather than recalculate all the information required by an encoder, a compressed domain transcoder simply removes information from the original video stream. Transcoding is faster than re-encoding, but results in a loss of detail, and is generally considered inferior to using an encoder to compress video.

I already have a good transcoder in DVDShrink, and I use it most of the time. However, in scenarios where my compression % in Shrink drops below 75% or so I use an encoding program like DVD-RB instead because the quality is noticeably better. It doesn't look like DVD-RB has been updated in over a year (although theoretically it's just a program that encodes so there's not much to update once it works), that's why I was looking for input in a new encoding program.

I already have the CCE Basic encoder, just need a program to run it - looks like for now DVD-RB is going to work fine for me.

Any off the DVD programs that shrink to a smaller DVD are compressing the info. No extra encryption/decryption is needed.

That's okay guys, I'm good to go with DVDFab and DVD Rebuilder, thanks for the replies.

Bobman, I'd found the link you posted earlier and had downloaded the program, but didn't looks closely and thought that it expired in 30 days. When I saw you post the same link again I took a closer look and realized that was only for the Platinum version, so I'm using DVDFab now to rip the DVDs and it's working great.

    Thanks
