From CBS News
Best-selling author and filmaker Michael Crichton died unexpectedly in Los Angeles Tuesday, after a courageous and private battle against cancer, according to a statement released by his family. He was 66.

Crichton is best known as the author of "Jurassic Park" and the creator of "ER." His most recent novel, "Next," about genetics and law, was published in December 2006.

Really enjoyed most of his books, and was a big fan of ER back in the day too. Damn shame.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Wow. I never knew he was sick, hush-hush. I also didn't know he was that old, he looked great. After reading his first book, A Case of Need (1968) written as JEFFREY HUDSON, I gained a new respect for his writing and his knowledgeable perspective. His books, to me, were great stories. Some, were also great commentaries if you chose to follow his line of logic. His voice will be missed.

I remember picking up "Eaters of the Dead" one evening and not putting it down until I was finished later that night. That doesn't happen often.

Prey was such an awesome book and I enjoyed the Jurassic Park and Sphere movies (minus Jurassic park 3; what a piece of crap but he didn't write it :)).

Sphere was an abomination to what was one of my favorite books of all time.

I don't know if I would have hated it as much had I not read the book, but Jesus what garbage :)

Bah! I enjoyed the movie. I still need to read the books for Jurassic Park and Sphere though. Books are typically better than their movie incarnations anyway.

I agree. What an armpit of a movie. I rank it among the worst I have ever viewed. Congo is not far behind. The original Andromeda Strain may be the best adaptation of one of Crichton's books. For some reason...his books did not lend themselves to the big screen. Even the Jurassic Park movie (which I thoroughly enjoyed) was no where near the caliber of the novel.

YES, read both those books. I liked Jurassic Park (the movie) but the book is really great. And Sphere is an amazing book, and luckily it has almost no relation to the movie so it won't be spoiled for you :)

It's a tough book to even consider making a film of because so much of it is mental. It's the same reason I don't think Stephen King's best books adapt well as movies; way too much mental stuff that just can't be shown on screen.
