Vintage XO upgrade karma

edited November 2008 in Vintage Speakers
Well I was digging through my parts, and found some caps that I bought to do some monitor 7's. Well I ended up giving the speakers to a friend of mine. I didn't have the time to do the upgrade before I left. So I have a pair of Dayton 12uf caps, and a Pair of Jantzen 33uf's.

Rules
1--- You must have vintage monitors, or RTA's. Some of the XO's require 2 more caps, and you are still qualified if you buy the extra caps when you purchase the resistors.
2---The winner will need to buy is resistors, and shipping both ways.
3---All entries are to be in by 8PM November the 8th.
4---The winner is to give a review of the speakers right after the XO's are installed, and another update after the speakers have had some time to burn in.

Sorry this Karma isn't a total freebie.
Ben

    Hey Ben
Just so we are clear, who does the actual upgrading or is that to be decided between you and the lucky winner? Just wondering. This could be interesting and I hope it is.
This is not a fit for me but I am sure others will show some interest.

The winner just has to ship the XO's to me, and have the resistors sent to me. I'll do all the work;)
This karma is most helpful for the guy who isn't into soldering, or have the tools.

Just the XO's have to be shipped. Not the speaker.

Ben, I've already got the resistors (Mills), AND the caps (Dayton), AND the solder (WBT) AND a pair of 7Bs.

Query: wouldn't it take some unsoldering and re-soldering to remove the crossovers for shipping, then to reinstall them, even for us non-soldering folk?

Most likely you will not have to unsolder anything when removing the x-over. But, with any SDA its always best to double check everything. Be sure to note which wire/connectors goes where so you don't have any question later. While you are in there you should check the values of resistors and caps to be certain they are what you think they are.

    Oh... durrr...

I think i'll still stay out, though... i don't have the room to properly use the RTAs right now, so they're just kindof sitting in a corner. :( Let someone else who will actively use them grab it. :D

    Ben,

I've been contemplating for the past week to post a thread asking to hire one of the Polk XO Gurus to upgrade my recently aquired RTA 15tl's (Great Speakers!) when I came across this thread. So, I'd like to throw my hat in the ring. I had been holding off as I don't know many members that well yet.

Some recent threads on RTA upgrades got me interested/excited about what was possible but I don't have the time (family) or ability to do this myself.

I just sold my Sl 3000 tweets to DeepBass so I'll be purchasing RDO 198's to add to the mix.

If this does not work out, I would still like to hire one of the more knowledgeable members to help me with the upgrade if possible.

    Cool Karma Ben,

I'll jump in for my RTA 11t's. They already have the RDO 194's and are broken in.

Dynamat on the mid bass and PR baskets.

I just checked the diagram for the 11's, and yours and the 12's are the odd ducks in vintage speakers. Yours has 4 caps each, and none of them are 12, or 34 uf's. Sorry I should have been more clear, and I can't friggen edit:rolleyes:

Ben the RTA 11t's use 2 12 uF, 1 34 uF per speaker, 1 2.0 ohm and 1 2.7 ohm resister per speaker.

I have been looking into doing the x-over. I will bow out if you want, I just thought I would jump in anyway.

Obviously the karma is yours to control - but just to open it a little wider, you could offer a crossover rebuild to anyone with Vintage Polk speakers and you will offer 4 caps (2 12uf and 2 34uf) to the rebuild as neccesary. They are responsible for all other caps and resistors.

That way they get the labor benefit (to be honest, the main part of the Karma) and they provide the needed hardware outside of those two caps.....

Just a thought. (self serving to be sure as my Monitor 10's will use the 12uf but not the 34's)
