Since I came back from Polkfest I've been listening to the MMG's I got from Mark; I played a lot with positioning, basically trying to make them disappear like my Dynaudios do. I have them now approx. 2 feet from side walls and 4 feet from the back wall, and I am very happy with the result. The micro Pro 3000 blends pretty good with them, giving that low end that the MMG's lack.

All in all, I could live with this sound ;)

    Stephen,
Thanks for the link. It quickly oriented my in the right direction for this repair. I bought a bottle of the DAP contact cement and will be applying it soon.

I included some pics of Maggie naked and a close up of were she is loose.

Ricardo- Glad to hear that you have a sub that can keep up with Maggies. I haven't had a chance to see or hear Polks new micro Pro subs yet. I'm finding that the low frequency bass from the MMG's sounds very different than my subwoofer. Even with the help from the SMS-1, it doesn't quite sound natural in this department.

The MMG's sure are intoxicating. I've put my Dynos away for now to let my brain adjust to the whole new sound of planar speakers. My next speakers will be Tyler Linbrook Signature system.

    Em Dog ,

Could You Please do a favor for me ? Would You please take a close up of the tweeter section of the MMG . I have seen the tweeter in
distant photos , but nothing up close .

Thank You In Advance , this will help me with my project of adding
a foil tweeter to my old MG I's .

    Cheers , Stephen

That rack looks heavy but you may want to try moving it backwards/to the sides of the speakers. The dipolar nature of the Maggies has quite a bit of sound reflecting off the rear surfaces and right now it's being blocked by your TV and rack.

What are those silver/gold boxes sitting on the floor on each side of your rack?

    Did someone mention a Haiku???????????????

If gettin with Maggies you must
then in a sub you will trust
not so bad in certain ways
but ALS kicks it in every way.

The End. No Maggies were harmed in the making of this little diddy.

A very austerely designed pair of monoblocks?

    Ern Dog ,

You might try pulling the MMG's out away from the rack , say a couple feet out from the rack , and have them out a couple feet out fro the side walls . . . play with the toe-in abit too ...

You got it. I'll do the surgery this weekend and will get the pic then.

I'll also experiment with speaker placement some. I don't have a whole lot of room though.

Hypothetically, if my rack and tv were not in that place, you're saying that the sound would reflect off the back wall and then come forward to the listening spot? Maybe I'm missing something, but I would think that would be a good thing that my tv and rack are blocking this reflection. This way all I'm getting is the sound coming from the front of the speakers.

    Ern Dog ,

With Maggies , the wave coming from the back , is part of the Experience .
I'm no expert here, but the dipole design , utilizes both the front and rear waves to complete the experience . The back wave helps create the huge sound stage that Maggies are known for . . . IMO .

In my set up , the Maggies sit back , tucked into nice little area beside the plasma tv when I'm not listening to music . When I listen to music , They migrate outward into the room . I have then out about 4 feet from the rear wall , with about 3 feet each from the side walls , and they end up about six foot apart from each other .

My suggestion is Play around with placement . . . Move them around , and another tip that others before me have shared is , try straightening them up , try a couple CD cases under the feet .

Ern Dog . . . You are in for some Incredible Fun . :D

Yup, my thoughts exactly. Placement and room acoustics are even more important with dipolar speakers. Just try it out, see if you get a more solid center image by moving the rack and TV. And I do have experience with Maggies :D Before video equipment was cheap (and before my days at Polk), I had a rather large CRT TV and equipment between my MGIIIA's. Later, I switched to a front projector and moved the equipment to the back of the room. Much better.

Magnepan's like to breath! Mine are pretty closed in, located in a crowded living room, but I do have some airspace around them. They still sound good, but once I am able to get them out in the open, the magic will get better.

Standing them straight up will also help. So will adding stands such as the Mye stands, which will support the panels more solidly and improve the bass. I also had a nice little improvement by going to ceramic fuses that had been cryogenically treated. YMMV.

    Well the mission was unsuccessful.

I applied three coats of the DAP contact cement to the affected area and then tested it the next day and the problem still exists, albeit a little less noisy. I popped my Dynaudio's back into the mix to help me forget about my frustration.

Here are the up close pics of the tweeter as promised.

    Ern Dog ,

I am sorry that the repair did not solve the problem . I have another question for You , did you swap speaker leads ?
The reason I ask , is maybe one of the mono blocks is the culprit . Maggies Can and Do Suck the life out of Amps , they want " Current " and can drive some Amps to " Clipping " .
Ern , heres some links that might help :

With my 20+ YO Maggie's, the panel was carried in a frame. Is there a panel that is not secure at the top in a frame? I do not know what current production is like.

I have a pair of Velodyne DD-12s to handle the bottom, end, connected stereo with speaker lines.

many manufacture's recommend dampening the back wave for dipole stats. room acoustics although still a factor are actually less important for stats than most cone drivers as the horizontal side wall reflection is not a major concern, you want to work with your stat speakers degree of dispersion with toe in and distances from the back wall, you may need some treatment on the wall behind you as well.
