Does anybody own one of these? I have a chance to buy one and am borrowing it and I have a question, when I set the listening selector to phono, tone controls off and turn the volume up halfway, running through the bypass or lab outputs,no turntable hooked up there is a hissing sound,is this normal or is something wrong? Should the inputs be shorted to test this,or are they noisy till a turntable is hooked up? It is dead silent in any other mode. Thanks.

Normal, the phono section has substantially more gain thus more noise will be apparent in comparison to the line level inputs.Testing

I agree with GV. AND, I tried it on my CT-17 Carver pre and it did the same thing as your 565; MUCH more hiss on phono. The 565 is supposed to have one of the quietest phono sections out there. Haven't heard one myself, but they are supposed to be an excellent pre with great dynamics.

Ok thanks guys, the only other preamp I have with a phono input is an old 70s Infinity fet,and it makes about half as much noise but the gain might be less. I will assume the 565 is ok as it is quieter otherwise.
