Setting up a crossover frequency with older equipment.

I have an older (10+ years) receiver that has a "sub out" RCA-type connection. I have the owner's manual; there are no adjustments that can be made nor does it say what any of the "sub out" specs are other than it's to be connected to a powered sub.
I don't have a powered sub.
I have a RM1000W (actually, 2 of them) passive subwoofer...works great for me with sufficient bass.
My current setup is:
- receiver to LF & reciever to s/w (L)
- receiver to RF & receiver to s/w (R)
Questions:
(1) Is there any way (or product) out there in electronics-land that can "cutout" frequencies below 80-100Hz so that the front speakers are not burdened with the low end grunt?
Such as something that would be attached between the receiver and each front speaker.
(2) I just obtained the second RM1000W; what would be the best way to connect this second s/w?
The only configurations I can come up with are:
(a) in series
(b) LF to one s/w and RF to the other s/w
(c) LF and RF going to each s/w (lots of wires in the back)
I don't have a powered sub.

I am kind of lost on your setup....
So you go from AVR left speaker level output.
to subwoofer left speaker level input.
To left speaker.
Then repeat for the right speaker???
I think what you really want to do is get a 2 channel amplifier and an RCA y-cable. (2 female - 1 male)
Hook the y cable up to the LFE or subwoofer RCA output on your reciever. hook the other side of the y-cable to some RCA cables and go to your separate amplifer.
Run speaker wire from your amp to your subs.
In your reciever, set your front speakers to small and run right output to right speaker, left output to left speaker.
If you end up getting a powered sub at some point in the future, you can use your 2 channel amp for another system or add it to power your front speakers.....

Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms) -
My receiver doesn't have any way of setting fronts/center/surround to "small" or "large" (that I know of).
The speaker wire connection is:
The reciever's left speaker output has 2 seperate speaker wires; one connecting to the left front speaker and the other to the subwoofer's left connector; repeat for right side.
Your suggestion (to make sure I have it correct) is from the receiver's sub out, connect a Y RCA cable leading into a 2 channel amplifier then, from the amplifier, speaker wires to the sub?
This connection will work for both stereo and Dolby surround sound?
Any suggestions for an amplifier?
Also, how can I attach the second sub (or it is not worth it)? -
amplifier would be any 2 channel amp. older NAD, Yamaha or Onkyo would work fine. (2 channel amp - 150wpc on up should run you about $250-$350 or so)
Y cable goes from sub out to right and left input on your amp. right channel goes to right input on one sub - left channel goes to left input on your other sub.
What reciever are you running? (concerned that it does not have dolby digital or DTS) If it is only dolby surround - sub outputs may only work with dolby (not stereo)Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)

For that much $$, I might as well say good bye to my subs and get a PSW125 (or similar) with line input/ouputs.
Anyway, thanks for the help. -
Receiver is a Denon AVR1500, so the stereo setup would be questionable (no sub?).

You need a Reckhorn F-1
http://www.reckhorn.com/index.php?ln=en&prod=f1
Where are you in NC?
Actually, just re-read your setup. The reckhorn will cut out the highs (and set the sub freqs), but it is a low-level RCA type box that would go between a pre- and power amp.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19

Interesting, can be used to cutout either highs or lows, but still requires an amp.
It's somewhat along the lines of what I am looking for - but not quite there.
Looks like I'm out of luck on this. -
Returning to the amplifier idea.
Using this amp as an example: http://www.crutchfield.com/g_10450/Amplifiers.html?tp=180&nvpair=FFBrand%7cOnkyo
Is the following correct:
From the back of my Denon (see attached), I would go from the "sub-out" with a Y-RCA connector to the Onkyo audio inputs (RCA connection - see attached); then speaker (wire) terminal connectors out to my passive subwoofer.
I ask because the Denon manual refers to connecting the "sub-out" to a subwoofer with a built-in amplifier verses the Pre-Out Center going to a "pre-main amplifier or seperate amplifier". -
Subwoofer (bottom RCA) to y cable. Then RCA cable connecting one end of the y cable to the right audio in. (on the right side) of the amp. Other side of y cable to the left audio in.
(feel free to ignore this part, but I have never seen an amp with an audio output right and left. I wonder if you could bypass the y cable and connect one cable from subwoofer out on the AVR to right in on the amp. Then right out on the amp (rca) to left in on the amp. - just thinking out loud)
Then you connect speaker wires from the speaker level out on the amp to speaker in on the sub. (right side to one speaker and left side to the other.)Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)

Well, I thought I had a good substitute for an amp - another receiver (Yamaha).
Connected an RCA plug from the Denon sub-out to an input (CD) on the Yamaha.
Connected speaker wire from the Yamaha L&R fronts to a "spare" speaker I have to test the connection. Worked fine.
Removed spare speaker and connected the subwoofer; .....nothing.
No sound.
Subwoofer worked fine last night connected to the Denon.
Reconnected subwoofer to the Denon.....nothing.
...power was off when making connections...
What the *(@#$ happened?
