Hello there !
I have 2 samples of this old but nice former Sony flagship.
Both have problems :
1) On first one, the laser does not focus any more and I get a "Can't read display". I have bought a spare optical pickup but then the laser diode of this brand new part does not even lights up though both motors (carriage and focus) are acting. Is it due to a different ECO for this part ?
The reference of the pickup part is KHM-270AAA. How can I check that the sapre part was not DOA ?
2) On second one, everithing works fine except it cannot read the SACD layer of hybrid SACD. Single layer SACD workd just fine (but they are scarce !)
I have already cleaned the lens with a special CD. I read it could be due to the DSD chip overheating. Will a heatsink help ?
TIA for your help,
Herv

Hello SCompRacer
Bingo and 2 thumbs up for you !
Blob removing did the trick. I have bound the player, my Weller and my wrist to a plate of copper which is a potential-when-i-get-time tube SE amp.
I can now listen in your honor to Stevens' Come on feel the Illinoise
Normal CD's, DVD's and true single layer SACD's are now reading.
Stangely enough, I am now facing the same problem I encounter with the second identical NS999ES player : only one hybrid SACD of my collection plays, others lead to a "Cannot play display" or to a cryptic C 13 70 error log.
One difference though : unlike the second player, this one does not even read the CD low density layer of the hybrid SACD's.
Looks like I need to recalibrate and find a Sony YEDS-18 test disc.
I have the service manual of the beast and I know how to enter in diagnosis mode with display on a TV set. Also, a guy from Nancy (the french town, not the former 1st ladyproposed me a copy of the YEDS-18 but I fear this kind of CD is purposedly made with very high tolerances which cannot be "verbatimed" ...
The diagnosis menu claims for DVD, CD or LVD (I do not know what it is ?) according to the menu item but I'm not sure if any test disc or even commercial disc is suitable or if one needs to have the genuine Sony test discs.
Alternative is of course to send to a Sony service center but these are scarce in France and transport + work are likely to cost more than the price of a NS999ES on the 2nd hand market
So many thanks for your help again !
