Vista Network Problem

My new laptop won't stop "identifying" the network. It will eventually identify and fully connect, but then immediately looses the connection and starts identifying again.

This problem has been driving me nuts. I've searched all over for a solution and can't seem to find one. All I keep finding is people having issues with DHCP which causes a similar issue.

Any help would be VERY much appreciated.

I found out Vista is VERY critical on incoming signals. I ended up cancelling Vista security and going to AVG, Adaware SE, and Spybot. No more issues.
Go to user access control panel and shut off Vista Firewall to start and see if that doesn't take care of it.
    Good luck running it down.

Tried that. I also tried disabling my Avast anti-virus. Still no go.

    Any other suggestions?

Run Windows update? E-mail Vista tech support, and say WTF?!
    Good luck.

    Yea. That did no good.

However a buddy of mine gave me a tip last night that seemed to stop the issue. He had me switch from WEP to WPA and it started working fine.

However this causes another problem regarding a wireless access point that I use for my xbox 360. It only supports WEP security. I understand that WPA is the more secure option, but since I'm only concerned with keeping not-so-tech-savvy neighbors off my connection, WEP is more than adequate. I'd really rather not buy a new access point, or take the time to run cable to the 360...So any ideas how I can get Vista to quit being pissy about WEP?

I have WEP and Vista laptop, don't experience what you've experienced. Perhaps it's worthwhile to try out wireless PC Card? or try another wireless adapter module? since you said it is a new laptop, see if you can talk to CSR and asked for a replacement wireless adapter module to try. What brand of laptop do you have? mine is older Compaq/HP.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

You could just MAC address restrict your network and ditch the encryption. I really doubt anyone is going to hijack your packets and read your mail. Sure MAC addresses can be spoofed, but it'd take some work- more than your neighbors are going to bother with.

Don't give me that crap. These days Apple is every bit as much "the man" as Microsoft is. Plus I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay near 3 times the price for the same hardware. Apple can kiss my A.

Oh yea! I was only 5 when it came out, but I know it. Ironically that song played at the restaurant on my first date with my wife. (She's black)

I've considered this, but it's not uncommon for me to have friends over that want to log on to the network, and it would just be a pain in the A to add all their MAC addresses.

is this true? I don't have a 360, but the PS3 does WPA just fine. I'd be surprised if the 360 didn't do it as well.

WEP is really legacy because it takes less than a minute to crack. Can't you run wire to your xbox and just use WPA? Or is your WAP a true one without ethernet ports?

The access point is entirely separate from the 360. It is essentially a little box that receives a signal from my wireless router and then connects by cable to my xbox.

Yes I could run a line from my router to my xbox, but I would rather avoid the pain of running a cable down two stories.
Wow, you really didn't catch my sarcasm?

No I caught it, and my reply wasn't necessarily aimed at you. (sorry if it sounded that way) I just really hate Apple's elitist attitude, and insane pricing. There stuff is only worth a fraction of what they charge for it.

Yes, I realize that. You said you switched to WPA but that caused problems with your 360. A cursory google search to me seems like the 360 supports WPA. If this is true, then it would be best to use WPA since that solves the issue with your laptop and then just try and figure out why its causing your 360 problems.

No I said it won't work with the Access Point which the Xbox has to connect to in order to communicate with the network. The way I have my wireless security set has nothing to do with the settings or abilities of the xbox itself. The WEP Passphrase has to be set in the wireless access point, not the xbox, in order to connect to the network.

Ah... I was confused. I was assuming the 360 had wireless built-in like the PS3. I guess this is not the case.

When you said wireless access point before I thought you meant your wireless router. Sorry for the confusion.
