how can i tell if im pushing my subwoofer toooooooooooooo hard, how hot should the amp get and how far should the sub extend i have a psw505. thanks

mikey, not familiar with your sub, but since no one else has responded I will use my limited knowledge and try to give you some generic answers. As far as how hot the amp should get, there is not a blanket cover all answer to this. It will depend on amp size and design. Just keep in mind heat is produced as power is produced. Depending on how the design is supposed to dissipate the heat will very a lot along with overall internal volume and location of things inside the sub. Some subs you might drive hard all day and maybe call the amp warm, others you might call HOT.
As far as driving it too hard, you are probably looking at distortion, and/or bottoming out the sub. I have never experienced either, but have heard others say you will know when this happens, because it will sound like crap.
Others that know the 505 can chime in but I think the Polks will have a protection circuit that will shut it down or limit the output to prevent this.
