Audio keeps cycling on and off when playing CDs

I am not sure how to search for this issue, and I am only just starting my research. I'll start here-perhaps my issue is a well known one, or perhaps I have have something defective.

Anyway, whenever I play a CD on my Pio elite DV48AV (CD or SACD), and I'm using just my Onkyo as the pre and the XPA-5 as the amp, it plays, but the output is constantly cutting off for a coupole seconds, then comes back fior a few seconds, and repeats. So far I have been able to get around this annoyance by disconnecting the HDMI output to my TV (The TV is on standy-not on), then everything plays fine.

I did not always have this problem-seemed to start recently-I am not sure if it started when I swapped my Pioneer DVD player or not (I'll swap back tonight). Like I said I haven't done much troubleshooting on this yet.

Has anybody seen this issue before?

Go into the 805's menu's, and set "HDMI Audio Out" to off. At least that was the way it worked on my old 885.

Thanks William--HDMI Audio Out was already set to Off. I tried setting it to On-no difference (then set it back to off)
I still had Analog in enabled for that input on the Onk from the old DV46AV-I disabled it-still no change.
When the TV is on-the problem does not manifest.
When I hooked up the old DV46AV-the problem does not happen (even when only using HDMI for audio)
If I turn the HDMI Monitor out to off, the problem does not happen.

So there must be either something wrong with the new DV48AV, or some thing weird between the 48AV and the Onk805-perhaps some signal that the 46AV didn't send. Or perhaps it has something to do with the TV? And the HDMI detection/control codes?? (which by the way I have all the HDMI control features on the Onk disabled). Or perhaps its a wierd thing between all three??? Very odd.

I haven't upgraded the Onk805 firmware yet, perhaps I'll start with that and then continue my research. At least now I know I can simply use the front control panel to turn the HDMI Monitor Out to off as an easier workaround than reaching behind to disconnect the HDMI out to TV cable (which I forgot twice to connect again and got yelled at)

That's why I thought it was the audio out setting, common issue on Onkyo's.

If it was a problem with the Pioneer, I don't think turning the TV on or off would make a difference. I'm guessing it's a handshake issue with the Onkyo, but I didn't have that trouble with my DV48-AV and the 885. Did you try a different HDMI cable?

I'll try a diff cable tonight--I'm not having the prob with the 46AV, just the 48AV. Odd. Of course the cable in use now is the same cable that the 46AV used to use-but I'll try another anyway. I might even try the 48AV in a different HDMI input.

new cable didn't make a difference, nor did trying a different input.
Time to try the firmware upgrade. About time I got around to that anayway....

Maybe something the folks at Onkyo could help with?

I had this same problem a while back, although under different circumstances. I had my cd player hooked up via optical cable. Someone suggested to switch to rca cables and it fixed the problem. Not sure if you'd get what you want only using rca's though.

I'll try it, but of course the main reason I upgraded to the 48AV from the 46AV was because I could send the SACD via HDMI and lose the ICs (well that and 1080p upconversion oh and so I could have an excuse to buy another SACD player to satisfy upgraditis, and ... and ...).
But certainly worth a try just to see if its strictly an HDMI handshaking thing.

Yeah, I think at some point I'll get on the horn with the manufacturers, but I know how tech support is (vast experience on both sides), and since this problem could be Onkyo's or Pioneers, or Mitsubishi's, well :rolleyes:. you know what I'm saying. I usually try to exhaust all self diagnostics first.

I either look for a simpler fix or make things more complicated your call....

But is the TV and 805 plugged into the same outlet?

The amp is direct in its own (new) AC outlet and the rest is on the Belkin PF60 in its own (new) AC outlet.
