CD Player On The Fritz

My Denon DCD-660 CD player from 1991 seems to have bit the dust. I was thinking of replacing it anyway for one with modern day capabilities (mp3, CD-RW, possibly SACD & DVD-A). I saw a universal DVD player, a Pioneer Elite DV48AV for $100 that plays everything including SACD, DVD-A and USB. Now I am only running 2 channel and no video on this system and the unit seems like overkill but the price is incredible.

While I like the flexibility of this unit, I am more concerned about sound quality. If I set my budget to $250, is there a better unit that I should consider?

Thanks in advance,
Stan

    Bump for a good question.

I don't know that unit but I am also in the market for a player around 300.00. I have been looking at used units to make the most of my money but a good new unit at that price would make me think twice.

I have been using the DV48-AV for about three months now, and it's the best universal player I have tried yet, but I am connecting with HDMI, so I can't really tell you much about the analog output's sound. It has played everything I have tried without any issues.

Others that I have tried all have some issues:

    Denon DVD-1930ci - Didn't read DVD-+R's very well.

Yamaha DVD-S1700 and DVD-S1800 - Both had major issues reading DVD-+R's.

Marantz VC-6100 - Very slow and clunky player, but played anything.

Oppo HD993 - Played anything, and by far the best picture, but did not display the correct aspect ratio on any MPEG4 or AVI files I tried. Was also disappointed with the build qulity for $400.

Anyone see any problem using a DVD player in a strictly 2 channel audio system?
