Monitor 7 Identification

Anyone know which Monitor 7 these are? I haven't taken anything apart yet to look at driver #s, but I was wondering if anyone could identify which Monitor 7 these are?

1. Looks like SL2000,
2. No fuses above binding posts,
3. Stands - attached via 4 screws through metal plate; base is laminate-covered particleboard (Polk original according to seller - curious if this is true or if retailer added them?),
4. Original manual included - specific for "Model 7 Studio Monitor System" (not the usual combined Monitor line manual with specs for all) - manual pic shows stands but they look different/not attached; manual also mentions the tweeter fuse, that these do not have, in the troubleshooting section.

Any ideas? 7, 7A, 7B, 7C? Anything else I could find on/in them to identify them?

Thanks!

I can't answer your question, but I can contribute these facts:

My 7b's, purchased new in '81 (serial #s 7B 30388 & 9), came with a book that looks exactly like the one pictured.

They came with stands made of particleboard that look just like those on the cover of the book. The stands are not screwed to the speakers; there are four rubber disks to prevent sliding.

    The tweeters are Peerless.

There are fuses on the back.

The midwoofer is part # MW6500

The cabinets do not have a bevel where the sides meet the front.

    Otherwise, the appearance seems identical.

    I hope this helps.

They look like 7C's to me. What's the serial number? Maybe that can help.

My 7C's have the Polk Badge on the speaker, not the grill, fuses, and have SL1000's.

Can you get the serial number? That's usually a giveaway.

But when it comes down to it, does it really matter which version of the 7 they are?

my guess would be 7B or 7C's. more likely 7C's since they don't have a fuse on the back.

I had somewhat eliminated 7C in my mind because of the badges on the grill...and no, ultimately it doesn't matter (except when the wife sees them and I end up having to sell them - maybe I'll keep them in the garage).

The exact reasons I was thinking not the 7B - fuses, Peerless and bevel.

    Yes, they were...Woodinville.

Overall, the cabinets and drivers are pretty clean (a few marks), the grills are nearly perfect, but one of the stand bases has some water damage from the bottom side. Was hoping to come across another pair of 7B - I had a pair for a while and really enjoyed them.

Found this from an old post:

    '84-'85 7C with the SL1000 tweeter
    '85-'90ish 7C with the SL2000 tweeter

So, there were 2 versions of the 7C, and the ones in question appear to be the later version.

My old 7c's had the SL2000 with the polk tag on the bottom corner. They look identical to what you have.

So those of you that have the model 7C, my understanding is that this model...

may or may not have fuses?
have bevel edges on the front of the cabinet?
have polk badges on the grill not cabinet?
have sl2000 (unless you have an earlier version)?

My understanding and experience tells me the 7B would have:
    fuses
    no bevel
    badges on grill
    peerless tweets

What about the 7A owners out there...what differentiates your model?

Do the A, B and C model use different drivers?

    Thanks for all the help!

I don't think any 7C's have fuses.. yours could also be series II, but I doubt that.. i think they are 7 C's. the most desirable are 7's with peerless tweeters. if I were you.. i'd replace those SL2000's with the RDO's. and call it good. :D

I just checked, my 7C's DO have fuses. But, they also have SL1000's. Soon they will have RD0-194 or 198's. ;)

I was going to say that it's kind of a pain they made so many sub models of speakers and subtle difference there in, but I realized that's what makes it so fun! I am still waiting to get my hands on a pair of 7s.

I have been thinking the same thing. It's really annoying...but it is fun to try and identify which model they are and why.

Well, the wife wasn't too happy I brought these home, so if they don't end up in the garage (replacing the 5jr+) they'll have to go back up for sale. PM or email me if you want first dibs.

Polk speakers are usually never labeled with a sub model. This is where the fun/guess work/detective work comes into play. The one of the best way to identify them is by the drivers and the crossovers.
