If you're open to recommendations for alternative servers, check out TVersity. IMO much better than WMP, and it can code alternative formats to something PS3 understands. This is how I got PS3 to work with FLAC.

Just install it, configure folders you want to share, and on the PS3 search for media servers. Simple as that. For FLAC playback you need to have FLAC codec installed. -

I heard of this FLAC codec before but I'm not familiar with it at all. What does it do? I just recently linked my VAIO laptop with my PS3 to up load all my songs from my laptop. They are mostly all mp3's. I was very disappointed with the sound quality through my RTI10's. I know it has nothing to do with the speakers but I'm curious to know why most of my songs sound so bad. Is FLAC something that can help with the sound quality of my songs already downloaded? I'm a firm believer of garbage in garbage out but I don't know how to download better quality. Most of my songs are 128mps I think it is and 44.1 Is this garbage?Fronts: RTI10's

FLAC = Free Lossless Audio Compression
Does not help with mp3's that are already converted but if you want to preserve CD quality and save a little in hard drive space, you can rip the songs (from CD) using FLAC instead of ripping them as WAV's.
CD audio is 44.1kHz, 16bit and 2 channels:
44100 1/s * 16bit * 2 = 1411.2 kilobit / s
mp3 compression takes out bits from that stream based on algorithm (certain frequencies that are less audible to human ears, low bass notes etc). Lossless compression does not.
1411.2 kb/s > 128kb/s
It's like pictures, where you have pixels and every pixel has bits that determine colour. 8 bits per pixel (bpp) gives you 256 (2^8) different colours where 24bpp gives you 16.7 million (2^24) colours. The more bits per pixel you have, the better colour the picture has. The more pixels you have, the better quality you have (480p video picture has 720x480 pixels, 1080p has 1920x1080 pixels). Same principle with audio.
480p frame with 8bpp colour takes 720x480x8 bits = 2700kb = 337.5kB (kilobyte) = 0.33MB
24 frames per second * 0.33MB = 7.9MB/s (uncompressed 480p 8bpp picture)
Same with 24bpp = 23.7MB/s
9GB DVD would hold 9 * 1024MB / (23.7MB/s) = 388s (about 6 minutes) of 24bpp video if it wasn't compressed. DVD standard limit maximum bitrate (including audio) to 9800kb/s which is 1.2MB/s which then holds 7680s of video (a little over 2 hours).
Sorry about the rant, and getting off topic with video, I just thought it might be easier to understand. -
Can you recommend a good FLAC converter download that preferrbly is free. Thanks Sami!Fronts: RTI10's

CDEx has built-in FLAC, another is EAC although it's not as easy and simple to use.

It's very easy to setup.
All you have to do is first off make sure you have Windows Media Player 11. Once you have the PS3 on, have it (the ps3) search for a windows media computer.
Go back to WMP on the computer you want your music shared. Open up WMP, go to options----> Library ---> Configure Sharing----> and allow the "unknown device" (which is your PS3).
Then go to options Library (i think) and monitor folders. Choose the folders your media is stored to. MP3's, .AVI movies, MP4 movies and music....etc....Share everything you want to access on your ps3.
Very easy to do, you can also read the thread here---> http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3media&thread.id=47608 tos see a more detailed explanation. But mine should work fine for you.
IMHO TVersity is pretty cool, but it really effed up my computer, and I had to uninstall it. All the different codec packs and crap really screwed up a lot of stuff. I got it to work, but my computer was just acting wacky. Was not really worth the headache IMHO. -
Got it working, thanks for the heads up. The info on Playstation.com was very helpful.:DOnkyo Tx sr805
