ok guys. Just wondering exactly what the xvYCC setting is for. I did some research but didn't come up with much. So far it looks like a new color standard many companies are trying to implement. It's suppose to allow a tv set to produce 1.8 times more colors than normal.

I tried this setting and blu ray discs looks stunning. It was a big difference with it turned on. The colors are so much more rich and vibrant. Even normal DVD's that have been upsampled to 1080p looks awesome with the xvYCC engaged.

ok my next question is regarding the Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr output. My PS3 automatically picks this output setting for dvd's and blu ray. Most likely for games too. So in the blu ray/dvd menu of the PS3, there is an option for Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr "Super White". Is it better to turn it on or leave it off?

Thanks

I do not have a PS3 but I did save alot on my car insurance, lol. Seriously though, I did read through ALOT of different forums posts to find the answers to your questions. Thought I should do this as I am getting my daughter and son one for Christmas.

xvYCC stands for Extended-gamut YCC. It is a (new) color space used in video electronics that is made to vastly outperform its predecessors. The xvYCC color space was specified by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in October 2005 and subsequently published in January 2006. This standard expands the current color data range by approximately 1.8 times.

Recording equipment that comply with this standard can produce color variations very close to what human eyes can recognize (the standard supports the full range of colors that can be seen by the human eye). Televisions that comply with the standard will be able to re-produce the images in almost the same quality as when it was recorded.

The High-definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) added support for the xvYCC color space in the HDMI 1.3 specification. xvYCC is referred to as x.v.Color also. The color space will greatly improve the quality of even High Definition video material.

Also, here it is explained again with a few new things.

Read this for your Super White question.

Last thing before I get outta here. On all the forums I have visited finding out the answer to your question, people that have LCD or Plasma displays that are 1080i or 1080p and support "full range" said this little change made a HUGE difference for them.

Switching the RGB range from "limited" to "full" on the PS3 made the colors even better. The colors can now be seen in all their glory.

    Big Mac,
Thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it. Looks like the feature is offered on models from 2006 and up. Looks like your daughter and son are lucky to be getting one for x-mas. The PS3 is an excellent console.

I can't believe the xvYCC feature is not talked about much at all. The difference in color presentation is like night and day, I tested the feature in the opening scenes in Rambo on blu ray where they show some nice landscape footage and it looked beautiful. For normal DVD's, I tested The Mask of Zorro and Matrix Reloaded. Again, a huge jump from the standard picture.

For those who have this feature on your TV, you really should check it out. My TV is a Samsung LN46A530P1F, so I'm sure other Samsungs in the same line should have it.

Yeah, I also set my RGB to full range. The improvement is very noticable. I was able to tell just by looking at the wallpaper on my PS3 menu. Not sure if it runs games on RGB or Y pb/.....etc because it runs my movies on Y pb....

    Thanks again, Big Mac

I won an X-Box 360 in a Clearwire contest I entered in at a mall on a whim. Within 3 days I had the dreaded red ring of death. I had it fixed but it happened again so I got rid of it. Hopefully I will fair better with the PS3. Who knows, maybe I will get lucky and find one in an unpaid storage unit that is in collections that I buy. I have found some interesting stuff in these units over the years. Nothing really that good lately but I feel like it's my time to have a good score.

Glad you posted back to let me know your results, thanks. Nice that I was able to help out a little here at CP. I love this place.........nice people on here.:D
