I hope I'm asking this question under the right thread anyway Here's my question: what do you guys think/opinion on Home Audio Equalizers. I like them. I'm not using one at the moment but I thought about buying that 12 or 15 Band Equalizer from Radio Shack. What Equalizer do you guys Recommend with the less noise. or should I buy one off the Used Market.

Thanks

The purists don't like tone controls of any kind. Unless you have "golden ears" you won't hear any difference having an eq in the audio chain if you bypass the eq controls. That leaves you some control to tailor the music to your liking beyond just using the basic treble and bass features on some gear.

I own 5 eq's....I don't use them all. But I wouldn't buy one from Radio Shack though. There are plenty of excellent used ones out there that can be had at a good price which were at one time "mouth watering" pieces of equipment.

EQ's are very useful for taming frequency peaks in a room, but can introduce noise. (don't boost the nulls) IMO, the proper use of EQ involves cutting frequencies, rather than boosting. Less is always better. Very few, if any system, or room is so perfect, that it couldn't benefit from EQ in some form.

Use the AEQ settings in your AVR and save yourself some coin if you must use one. I personally turn it off.

Agreed, room modes can be a problem especially in the <100hz range and EQ can be very benificial in reducing their effect. This is why many subwoofers have integral parametric EQ's to notch out the most offending peak(s).

eqs can often result in phasing, the more bands you have the more phased the output will be???

I think EQ is find for subwoofers, but I don't use any for my main speakers. What's the point of buying different speakers, then EQing them so they all sound the same?
