What happens to your gear if something happens to you?

I've been wondering what will happen to my beloved "audio gear" if something should happen to me. I'm not married, a single full time father of a 7 year old, my oldest kids are grown and gone, and none seem interested in my audio passion.
I've got a substantial collection of high end gear and I'd hate to see it all go to waste.
I just amended my will to specify what is to be done with it. I have a close audionut friend designated to take care of all of it for me "just in case" I don't have any say in the matter. I'd hope I get to make the decisions. Who knows?

IF you specified what to do with it in your will, its pretty much all you can do. If you have alot of high end stuff and alot of bills when you go. definitly possible the stuff might have to be sold. A HTIB probably wouldnt show as a major asset in probate, but 10's of thousands in audio gear sure will ;)

Other than that, if you have a friend that is into audio and wants it, let him have it. if you want it sold to give the kids the cash, you can do that too.

if your woried what will happen to your audio gear when you die...you probaby have other major assets you should be asking the same question on. just make sure your will adequately handles all of it.

Unless you make other provisions it becomes part of your estate. Kids are free to fight over it if you don't specify in your will who gets what.

My children are quite young right now, but I hope to pass my love for audio gear and music on to them, in which case, I would simply leave the gear to them. If they
go the path of not being interested in audio gear, I've always thought that I would have someone who is knowledgeable of audio gear sell off the equipment at fair prices and then forward the money to my remaining family. In my case, I would have my brother do it. I would designate that he could keep a fixed % for his efforts.

I think its a good idea to have a detailed inventory of your gear, noting where important accessories, manuals, etc. are located. Also document any specifics about the equipment that may increase value, such as modifications, rarity, etc. Its probably more work that most of us are willing to do, especially if our collection of equipment is not that valuable. But IMHO, if you start getting up to system(s) that are worth $10K or more, it should be done, if only for insurance reasons.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Nobody else in my immediate family is into audio much , so I told my wife to give it to my best friend. Funny thing is, his setup is almost a mirror image of mine...he already got my 3rd pair of 1.2's....same TC Sounds subwoofers...hell even the same 58" Panny plasma ( Which my wife says is staying right where its at :) ) He even went out and bought Carver amps after he heard mine....so I guess he doubles up if I kick the bucket. :p

Mine will go to my wife,,as we have already given the children(three girls--in the twenties) a "vintage" 2 ch system for Christmas last year. So that means that the Amazings and the rest of that systems gear will be for sale--here.Gotta go take my meds now--:D;)

I imagine my other half will continue to enjoy listening to music on it.

Even though my gear is worth a substantial amount, there are much bigger and more important assets to worry about. Make sure you have a will, and keep it updated.

    Interesting question.
~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

Nobody in my family is crazy about this stuff like me. When I executed my last insurance policy, which also included a will, I left all my gear to my fiance who may choose to sell it, but is strongly urged to distribute the gear among a select list of audiophile buddies who are never entitled to sell the gear but may choose to pass it on to others who they know will not sell it. (I'm not sure any of that will be strictly enforced, but I have a lot of faith in the honor of my friends.)
