So, over the course of the last two years, I've developed the reputation of turning my gear over pretty quickly. Right now I have speakers that I love love love. The sound is excellent, but like any good audio ****, my eyes and mind continue to wander.

I see speakers I've never tried and I think oooohh I'd like to try those. Is there anything wrong with that? My thinking is that if I try all different types of speakers now, then maybe when I'm older, I'll have an understanding of what kind of speaker I most enjoy and perhaps finally settle down. Has anybody lived this theory or am I just kidding myself?

Thanks,

Mike

For me, trying different stuff is the best part of this addiction.

Do you ever narrow down your choices? My thinking is that I should try different types of speakers while I have the money and no kids or family to support. Then once I figure out if I like planar or box or whatever, then I can just buy something for a little longer term.

I don't really have a "plan"; I just enjoy trying different speakers. Of course when I find something that stands out, I keep it longer. It seems that the Dynaudios will make it to a full year with me; that would be a record. But I am looking forward to listen to the MMG's I'm getting from Mark at polkfest.

My systems (HT and 2 channel) have been pretty static over tha last few years. My HT has not changed at all in the last 3 years. My only real changes in my 2 channel rig have been to move a couple of CDPs in and out and occasionally swap speakers for another pair that is sitting the basement but no new purchases. I am considering a TT upgrade, but that may be a while down the road. I concentrate all of my A/V spending on software. I average several hundred LPs, CDs, and DVDs per year. I am not much of a tweeker, so I don't change my rigs very much. I do play around with my "nostalgia" system. I like the old Silver Pioneer gear and old TTs so I add to that hoard from time to time. Other than a TT upgrade there is nothing I really want or "must have" right now.

It's simple, just get a pair of Carver ALS Platinum's and you won't be tempted to change again. Now you will be constantly trying different amps in the search for the perfect power to drive 'em.

I think most of us want to try different equipment. What you should do is look for a piece of equipment, get a great deal and then turn it for a little profit. Use that equity to move up the chain. Like flipping houses. Then again, if you have tons of cash, just buy the best. This way you get to experience different equipment while improving over the long term. Good luck.

Yeah, I've gotten quite good at flipping equipment on Ebay and Audiogon. Definitely don't have tons of money . . . If I did, I would just buy the best and never have to talk to you guys about my next steps.

    SS,
I've had the same dilema recently. I tell myself: "I'm done upgrading and I just want to stop the upgrade cycle because I feel very satisfied with my system. This is the best its ever been...." And this thinking lasts maybe a day tops before I wonder if I can squeeze out more performance by getting better speakers or cdp. Some days this bothers me and other days it's not a big deal. I average about 2-4 new cd's every month.
