Is it me, or is BASIC grammar and communication skills a thing of the past? I'm not trying to pick on anyone but it's getting somewhat ridiculous. Call me old fashioned but how friggin' hard is it to use reasonably decent English?

Doesn't anyone after reading their own post, think to themself "Wow, I sound like a ****." ?

Language Arts? Is that what they call it now, damn that's sad, but explains alot. It was called English not long ago because that is what we speak in America. I quess the term English isn't PC today, but I've got something to say, in plain English, to those PC people that they will understand.......**** off!

Look, Sid, you seem like a decent lad so I'm going to give you a little FREE advice. If you want to get ahead in life (this applies anywhere) effective communication is a BIG plus. You can be the smartest dude in the world but how you communicate says volumes about you. It doesn't mean you have to sound like you swallowed a dictionary (a windbag might even be a little worse than a ****) but being able to communicate effectively is one of the single greatest door openers in life.

Plus, women dig a dude who can carry on an intelligent conversation. If you can't get past hello, you ain't going anywhere. Unless, like moi, you rely on chloroform.

Don't feel like I'm talking about just Sid either, there are a few guys around here that could brush up a little

    Troy,
I totally agree. Today's 'English' to the old is sloppy, malformed, misused, reused, reproduced, slang, abreviated, shortened, cut, everything imaginable. What you and others may not understand is rather comprehendable to others of my age. I can hold a conversation without misunderstanding for hours on end. With girls and guys of my age. Only when I talk to people over the age of 20 do I have to watch the way I use spelling and grammer. I tend not to care when I talk to people online, because everyone I talk to are mostly from school. We all use the same lingo/slang whatever you wish and choose to call it, now If you wish I can sound like I have my nose stuck up someones ****$ and post like a human dictionary. That is if you request and comand that upon me, other wise I will continue to post the way I do, but I will try to put it in a form to in which is easy to understand.
I do not feel that I have to be forced to use 110% correct grammer or spelling. I choose in my own wishes to use slang, abreviation and any cut off in the english language known to man kind. I am sorry for any discompfort I have caused to your eyes and your mind....

Now newayz, I am tired of posting like a brainiac.....in other words - I post how I post, and I try to make it fast and simple and understandable. I will try harder in the future! LOL! newayz....im watching we were soliders...nice movie!

    Hey, I'm not old! At least I don't consider 32 old. ;)

I'm just saying, at a young age, I learned if I wanted people to take me seriously, I had to learn to communicate. If you sound like a moron, generally, people will think of you along those lines. That's just the way it is.

Hey, it's just some friendly advice, not a command or anything of the sort, just a little friendly advice.

I'm not attacking anything nor do I think that communication was any less important or common, say, 15 years ago.

All, I'm saying is that HOW you communicate, for better or worse is generally how people are judged. Right, wrong or indifferent that's how it is. If you don't appear to care about HOW you say something, most take it that WHAT you say is equally unimportant.

    Anyone see my point here?

    Sid,
Look at it this way...We, for the most part, are not your age nor are we your classmates. You will be taken much more seriously if you talk to a person using as much proper english as you can muster up than you currently are by using internet slang, or what ever it is called. Just a little friendly advice from the old guy!

    How funny..........

Language Arts huh? I agree with F1's earlier post. Jesus.......The sad thing is that a LOT of people nowadays show that speaking or typing properly isn't to be bothered with. I think that it's somewhat amazing that people go on the defensive and (sorry Sid) say that they're using online slang and then type something like "sayd" or "sed" instead of "said." Online slang is more like Sid's second post of "r u serious." which is fine, but the problem being mentioned here is that words that shouldn't be completely jacked up are, and constantly.

For me personally, I've kinda learned whose posts I'm not even gonna (internet slang) read because it's ridiculous to have to try and make something out of what appears to be a big jumbled mess of letters. No one's perfect, but it's a cop-out to say that the style of typing is "internet slang" when clearly it's more along the lines of (and intended or not) "lemme (slang) see how ignorant I can make myself appear."

I agree with you Troy on effective communication. Slang in fun is one thing, but there's no excuse to constantly come off as so lazy that you can't even TRY to spell words properly (that have no slang intended in their (not they're) presentation). Sometimes it's hard for me to take someone seriously, be it here or in person, when they can't seem to be bothered to THINK before they type. It's really not that hard.......

    agreed, Good post brettw..
I sometimes spell incorrectly not on purpose but because i simply don't know how to spell it, or actually think i am spelling correctly.
would anyone ever admit that?? I also only use LOL or hehehe as internet slang and sparingly... Its very annoying to read (newayz)
instead of anyway, or a vaste number of words, But lets not start picking post apart for spell check. But please take the time to place comma's where they should be, periods are good so we know where it starts and ends. And spell close as possible to what we are writeing so we know generally what you are trying to ask.. spell checker for club polk is in order it seems.. Ok Ok i need a small lesson in spelling sometimes, but not much.

I agree with the lol thing. In moderation is ok, and sparingly is even better. Seeing it SEVERELY overdone is almost upsetting (for me personally). I have no problem against happy people generally speaking. The method and style of communication you choose should match the occasion. If MX is online with his school friends, then they'll use mutually acceptable slang and easy phontic spellings. He said it himself... the method/style he uses with other kids, not with adults.

These forums are frequented primarily by adults - a diverse group, geographically and socially - so the method/style should be more proper. Even within that context, we on these forums have our own slang and vernacular associated with audio/video. You can tell instantly, whether a post here or a product description on e-bay, whether the person is on the 'inside' of audio or is knocking on an unfamiliar door.

If you want to be successful communicating to different people or groups, then you have to develop and understand *different* styles and methods of communication. I think Russ is essentally getting at that by saying "read more, post less." In other words, take a moment to learn about the style/method used here.

I agree that if the method/style of communication is a mismatch to your audience, whether your audience is forum readers, or your spouse, or your boss... then you are not communicating as effectively as you could, and perhaps not at all. You don't pay to skywrite "Shirley, I want a divorce" over the Bears game, while attending the game, if Shirley is at at the laundromat trying to get the skidmarks out of your shorts.

I think where MX happens to be, is... he has interest, he has some knowledge, he seems to have a desire to learn (if he can learn to let go of some of his preconceptions)... I know he has a hellofa nicer rig than I had when I was 13... he just happens to be still using his junior-high online chat persona. Others here don't seem to know what punctuation is, others couldn't spell their way out of a 7-11. I'm too wordy (which I do work on.. usually.. unless, you know, I'm being *very* insightful and witty).

Wow maybe you were right above, we are beating a dead horse to death!!! Its a forum/message board with NO, well not many rules ok.. Lets end the whoever can't spell is an idiot rant!!
I for one love to post and ask lots of questions and don't always take the extra time to put comma's and periods and do a spell check before i click post. So what, just write so we can understand it. To say a 13 year old should write the way we do or it won't be taken seriously basically is rubish. Or should i say i'f he uses slang overly it won't be answered and taken seriously. Like the post where he was having a hard time with the amp and totally aggravated it seemed and people picked on him for the first few posts and didn't lend help. No we are not all perfect and i have never in all the boards i have wrote on have ever seen so many angry, aggravating people on a board. everyone lighten up and stop the lectures. lets just post OK. I know i will get fried for this one here but ya know, enough is enough, you have Troy and Mantis and others pissing at each other and everyone telling MX this and that, what is this the learning channel or a speaker forum to learn and have fun.. I leave sometimes more irratated then dealing with my crying 6 month old and 4 year old girls.. Ok cliff steps off the soap box waiting for a forum verbal beating.. :(

History would show the contrary. People have absolutely missed or ignored the point of some posts because the post was almost painful to read. Being young or ignorant is not a fault, but how you seek to alter your ignorance can certainly affect your success.
