- Jack Sparrow returns for Pirates 4

- The Madd Hatter in Burtons Alice in Wonderland

- Tonto in the up and coming Lone Ranger

...and one that has not yet been announced. I'm all for Burton's remake of Alice in Wonderland, no doubt he got the perfect guy for the Madd Hatter. Not so sure about the other two films though...

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Superstar actor Johnny Depp has signed on to three new Disney projects, including the fourth installment of the blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, the entertainment industry newspaper Variety confirmed Thursday.

Along with the reprisal of off-beat pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp will star as the long-suffering Native American sidekick Tonto in a new version of the iconic "Lone Ranger," produced by hit producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

If this wasn't enough for the 45-year-old actor, Depp will also play the Mad Hatter in director Tim Burton's adaptation of the classic "Alice in Wonderland," using a mix of 3D animation and performance capture technology similar to that used for 2007's "Beowulf."

The announcements for "Ranger," "Wonderland" and "an additional role" were made before a crowd of roaring fans in Hollywood Wednesday when Depp appeared at the Walt Disney Showcase, a preview of the studio's productions over the next few years.

The "Pirates 4" confirmation arrived early Thursday through the actor's representatives in Variety.

The franchise has been a worldwide phenomenon since the first installment in 2003, earning more than 2.6 billion dollars at the box office.

Fans are rejoicing the actor's reunion with director Burton, who has created the milestone projects of Depp's career, including his breakout role in the 1990 blockbuster "Edward Scissorhands," and 2005's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Like many of Depp's roles, the new Disney projects seek to attract as many adult viewers as they do younger fans.

No premiere dates for any of the projects have been announced.

Thank you! I was wondering if I was the only one that paid any attention to the movie!

I sat in the theater and said "There's gonna be a sequel." and like 6 people around me said "You think so? What could they make it about?"

I'd love to see a new Pirates movie, but only if all the same actors come back. Specifically, Keira Knightley...she's the only one I've read that said she didn't want to do another movie. I'm sure if they offer her enough money she'd come back. If not, I'm not a fan of sequels (other than the Dark Knight) that have different actors in main roles.

I also read that Depp is getting $56 mil just for the 4th Pirates movie!

Depp as the Madd Hatter sounds perfect. As Tonto, I'd imagine he'd be pretty funny assuming it's a comedy/action flick.

Still crossing my fingers that the rumor of him playing the Riddler in the next Batman movie is true.

Well I'll admit it's kind of silly in parts but overall I'd have to say it was well worth watching. It's got a lot of subtle humor that can fly over your head if you're not into the movie. Maybe you just have to have a warped sense of humor like me but I thought it was hilarious....maybe hilariously ridiculous....but hilarious just the same.

I liked the Lone Ranger for Depp. He was into the role like normal.

If you are a Depp fan it is worth the watch!

Exactly...I don't pay attention really to flicks nowdays....my wife orders them all. To tell you the truth I had no idea Depp was even in this movie but I kept thinking, damn...I know who that dude is. And then you see the credits and I saw Depp as a producer and I immediately said "of course...that was Johnny Depp!" Same mannerisms as Sparrow and Sam (Benny and Joon).

Right, that was pretty awesome. In fact if you watch it again, in the opening moments you'll see a Pirates logo appear just briefly.

    Jack Tonto, or Tonto Sparrow?

Armie Hammer, who played the Lone Ranger, reminds me of Brandon Fraser both in appearance and acting style.

This thread is almost like a time capsule (back into 2008): Depp was arguably the "hottest thing going" when he signed this deal, and all these projects are now (almost) complete with a mixed bag. Pirates 4 and Alice did VERY well; Lone Ranger did NOT and the yet-to-be-announced flick isn't due out until the END of 2014 (Into the Woods) and doesn't look that interesting to me (a MUSICAL? about CHILDREN's stories?). What's telling about the aftermath is his next 2 announced projects are: another Pirates, and another Alice! You can't blame him for collecting (huge) paychecks, but it seems as though he's lost his leverage with NEW projects. While I'm a fan of Depp, I thought the Lone Ranger was a mess (he basically played Jake Sparrow in Indian dress).

I noticed this is the consensus of some. Personally, that's what I found great about it. Although I grew up with the "Lone Ranger", It was my wife that finally got me interested in the Pirate movies, and I felt Depps spin on Tonto was pretty good.

And as you say, that's exactly what it was...Tonto Sparrow, but as I mentioned in an earlier post, did you notice the Pirates logo at the beginning of the movie? After that, what else could you expect? :)
