I'm not a DAC expert. I have an Adcom GDA-700 that is pretty nice, and helped my system quit a bit, but with a $500 cap you should be able to do pretty good. Hopefully others will chime in soon.

If I were looking for a good DAC under $500, I would get a Theta Pro Progeny but they are rare and hard as hell to find used.

I have heard good things about that DAC, you would be under budget, and Andy is a straight up guy.

That get's my vote. Theta makes great gear. Killer $$$ new, however this is a good deal.
I love my Theta.
