PC games for kids, cheap

My wife is going to have a baby... any day now.
As part of the adjustment process, we are going to buy some new PC games for our kids (to help fill some time while mom is with new baby).
My 8yo son loves action/adventure/flying/fighting games. I was looking into getting him a war flight similator. But, I'm caught between not being able to spend too much, but not wanting a game that is so old that we have compatibility problems. We've run into that with quite a few of the cheap/clearance games we've bought for our 4yo.
Seems every game I find, I can find good reviews, and crappy reviews. MS Flight Sim 2 Pacific, Europe, etc. MS Flight Sim 3, which is newer but generally is reviewed as not as good as Flight Sim 2.
I have extremely LITTLE experience with PC games. So, I wanted to check here to see if anyone has any opinions, recommendations, warnings, maybe even used games for sale.
I'm looking for fun, playable games for an 8yo boy.
While you're thinking about it... I want to get something for my 11yo daughter, too. They both like SimCity - mostly they like to build a city then have Godzilla destroy it. But if you know of any good games, Harry Potter, Star Wars, whatever, I'd be interested in hearing about it.
Thanks, Polk crew.

Could you please list your computer system specs? I may be able to recommend a few good games that can be found cheap.
P.S. Congrats on the future arrival!KEF Q150 | Rythmik F12 | Yamaha Aventage RX-A780 -
Here is the PC we have. I've upped the RAM to 1Gig, and we have a newer video card.

what kind of video card?
With the PC you have, the video card will probably be what determines what kind of games you can play. The processor and ram are good enough for most anything.KEF Q150 | Rythmik F12 | Yamaha Aventage RX-A780
