Only because I dont' have my USB cable for my iPod with me and I do have a 1/8" cable, is there a way to use my iPod through WMP or WinAmp via some Aux In option and just control it through the iPod instead of either of those programs? I've looked and I don't see anywhere I can flip that kind of option on...........

Basically I want to use it like I would be if I were in my car plugging it into the stereo..ya know?

Line in on your sound card. Then you'll be able to play through your computers sound card and speakers. The only thing you would be able to do is control the volume (or anything else your sound card lets you do to audio).
You won't be able to play the songs in any applications on the computer though.

Or you could just plug the speakers directly into the ipod.

I'm on a laptop, so the only thing I can do is plug the iPod into the microphone jack..........past that, is there an application that you can use where you can basically just play the music directly off the ipod (using the ipod itself as the interface, but using the program to play the sound through my computer).......

Some laptops have a line in but you might be able to use the Mic in the same way

Otherwise not unless you have an iPod dock or USB cable. But not via the headphone jack. The Headphone jack on the iPod is no different that a standard headphone jack on any other portable audio gear-such as a walkman, etc. No Magic, no streaming, no data.

I'm sure there is some fancy audio application out there that can take mic or line in signals and allow you to do whatever with them including pipe them through WinAmp or whatever, but it would likely be easier and cheaper to just buy a USB to iPod cable or even external speakers for the iPod.

What's your goal? Just to use the laptop's speakers?

btw.........when I plug my iPod into my headphone jack a popup asks me whether I want to use the port as a Line-in or mic..........I've tried both options but there still needs to be a way for winamp or wmp to play what's coming into it via line in..........at least I would think............

and the ipod is sending sound out of that jack, so if i have that stereo cable plugged into it, the sound should be able to be heard........

once you tell it to do line in, right click on the sound icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar, open volume control, and make sure that the line-in isn't muted. At that point you should be able to hear it. start w/ the volume low on the ipod, then bring it up (line in usually has a 200mv sensitivity (ie tape level) and the headphone out on the Ipod can exceed that.

    Mic-in/Line in autodetect-hmm that's cool.
I still doubt you'll be able to use Winamp, but you will be able to use whatever controls that your sound card provides to get sound out of the speakers. If your sound card drivers have an EQ for example you could use that. Or perhaps just the plain old Windows Controls Volume, Balance, etc. (which actually pipe through the sound card driver).

As unc2701 said, make sure the Line In volume isn't muted and is turned up.
