I am looking to purchase some older Polk speakers and I ran across this ad where I live. Here is a link: http://richmond.craigslist.org/ele/846047747.html

I emailed the person offering them and asked what model they were. I was told they are from around 1994 and they are model 2's. I cannot find anything on model 2's so I thought I would ask for some help finding out something on these. Thanks for any help you can give me.

**will try to get him to post more pics of speakers so it will make it easiet to identify them**

By looking at the pic listed, I think they may be RT55's. Granted the picture isnt great, but given the size, their appearance and timeline, it seems to fit.

I would take a ride and check myself. Giving the admitted condition, if they are sonically ok that is still a steal of a price. Not to mention the stands he is throwing in.

So if they're close, take the ride. Quickly, before they are noticed.

    Dave

After looking around, they may actually be one of two models. One being the RT55 and the other the RT7. I've edited to include links to both.

    and

A call or email to the seller asking the driver count would eliminate one.
Once again we meet at last.

I sent him an email asking for more pics; attached a pic of the older model RT55 so he could answer if that is what his speakers look like. Just waiting on a response from him. I originally sent him the first email yesterday and just got a reply right before I posted here asking for help. These are the pics I sent.
Thanks for the help. Appreciate it.

**sent email before I knew you updated your post adding the rt7. Don't want to email this guy to death so I will wait for a response.**

They look like monitor 4.6's, or 5JR's.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

By the size he listed I think Ben may have nailed it with 5JR's.

If they're close, take a ride and listen to them. It's craigslist, it wouldnt surprised me if you snagged em for less.

My Monitor Series 2 M5 JRs are 19.5" high and 9" wide, differing by 0.5" in each dimension from the seller's description. Also the logo is centered at the bottom of the grille. In the seller's picture they appear to be off center.

Ok here is the response email I received a few minutes ago. I asked for some pics and when he is available so I can come see the speakers. Now I am curious as to what these are. Hmmmmm.........
My pair of speakers has one big speaker (big circle) on each rather than two, along with the one smaller circle. As you can tell I'm not an audio expert. Anyway still interested? I can take a pic if you need, will just take a bit of time...

Here is that pic of the speakers. Are they the 4.6 possibly? Are they worth $70.00, or I should ask if $70.00 is a litle steep in price. If so what do you think is a fair counter offer? Again, thanks for all the input and help.:)

I think your Monitor 4.6 guess it right. The port is in the same location and they have the same SL2500 tweeter. They look like they are in good condition, but $70 is still a little steep IMO.

Where is Ben? I still think they are Monitor 5 series 2 with the SL2500 tweeter. I don't think 4.6 came with that tweeter. Could be wrong about that was once before and probably again sometime in the near future;)

They may be the satellites that were part of that 3 piece system that had a sub woofer module with 2 6.5 mids and a passive 10" or 12".

I do not remember what it was called and I have only seen it once or twice on the interwebs.

Thats definately a Moniter 4.6 Series 2... I have the 4's. The 4 and 4.6 have the front firing port tube. The rest have passive radiators and boxes graduating sizes. They are circa 1990-1994? by looking at the badging on the grill. (mine are 1991) Same as mine. 4.6 and up have the SL2500 tweeter in them. Soft poly dome...
Mine is the SL1500 hard poly dome.

    Here's the 5jr

Ok, here is the situation. I can purchase the 4.6 for $60.00 or I can get some 10b for $90.00. Is the tweeter that is in the 10b the one people say is so good or is it the older version that needs to be upgraded....also, same question for the 4.6. I know they are different in many aspects but if YOU were in this situation which ones would you buy? Lately I have been listening to alot of REM,blues,Staind,10,000 Maniacs,Sevie Ray Vaughn, and when I listen to the music I have it turned up to the point that my wife and kids say it is to loud when they come home. Personal opinions are VERY welcomed. I want all of it.....the good, the bad,the ugly.

My current setup (don't laugh tooo hard now.....even though I am laughing as I type this):

    Nad 7045 receiver
crap cd/dvd player (getting a NAD in a few weeks)
    Infinity SM105 speakers
    Luminous Audio IC
    Luminous Audio speaker wire

spend the extra $30 and get the 10b's. If you are getting the ones pictured for $90 with the stands that's a bargain. It does look like the SL2000 that most people say needs to be upgraded, my RTA 12c's have the same tweeter and I think they just sing, so only your ears will tell you if you need to upgrade or not. So to be clear SRV deserves to be heard on the bigger speakers, the 4.6 would make nice computer speakers but they will not move enough air to make the hair on your arms stand up, that's the job of the Monitor 10's. Now quick get out of the house and buy the 10's then post a picture of your face when you listen to SRV turned up to 'eleven'!

Everyone can't have SDA's and Bryston amps. Including me.

Personally, I have not heard the big money difference between all my Sony CD and even the plain ole DVD players I have to warrant spending mega bucks on a "reference" CD player. ISony invented the technology so they might know what their doing.

Get the 10's they are nice!

I had the SL 2000 in some in-walls it's not a bad tweeter.

If you dont like the tweeter there are other options in the Peerless/Vifa line.

I just sent an email for an offer to buy the Polk 10b's. I will keep the speakers as they are now for awhile to see if I like how they already sound. I know what those little nipple tweets sound like you mentioned because I had the LSi7's not to long ago. Good speaker for clarity, imaging and detail in the highs but the mids were lacking (sounded muddy and lifeless) as well as the bottom end....at least that is what my ears told me,lol. I am very excited to get my hands on my first pair of older Polks. I kinda feel like a kid in a candy store. Thanks to all those that helped me with everything. Without you all I would be lost pretty much. I know I could read, read, and read some more but like you all have said a million times on here listen to your ears and learn by trial and error by trying things out for yourself.:):D

I kgot a set of 10B's on ebay from a guy in Calif (bigboy*****). The ad said "Mint" and when I got them, one cabinet corner was crushed, one speaker frozen, one speaker grill with the grill spikes broken off (stuck in the cabinet). I emailed him and he said they were mint to him and were working fine. What a crock! So, buyer beware. Also, he said that he would refund my $ but not the shipping which was $100. So if I return them, I'll be out $200 and no speakers. I'll keep em and fix the speaker and use them for surrounds.

Picking up the 10b speakers tomorrow. I know the gentlemen that is selling them and he is a stand up guy. He has lots of vintage gear that I would also pick up if the fundage allowed for it. I have to admit, I don't know if I will ever get rid of the audio "bug" now that I caught it again, lol.

I picked up the 10b's with stands today for $100.00 and they look pretty darn good. I will post picks tomorrow when I get some new batteries for my camera. I did notice a little slit which is in the shape of a "v" in one of the rubber surrounds on the woofer of one speaker. I wanted these speakers no matter what so I made the decision to buy them anyway. The "v" slit is right on the rounded part of the rubber surround. I was told to use a rubber based silicone and to put a small amount with a brush over the slit and to let it dry. Then apply 1 more light coat and I should be good to go. Should I try this option or should I just get a new woofer and pop it in? I did push in the radiator a little to make sure the speakers were ok. All speakers moved together in unison just fine. That little slit does not seem to affect anything but then again I have not really cranked them up yet.....just to the 9 o'clock position. I don't want to screw up somethingso I will be patient. I welcome any help or suggestions with this.

I looked on ebay for some woofers and I only saw 1 that was for the 4.6 and sda Polk speakers. Anyone know where I can find a few woofers for these 10b Polks? thanks.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day

Hey Mac, I did not know you knew me!!
Things look good. I am not sure what you should do with the slit in the rubber but I bet others will chime in. Monitor 10's with stands for $100. is a great deal. I don't see the grills but maybe they are off to the side.
What other equipment did this guy have?
What do you think you want to look at next since you got the "bug" ?
    Congrats Drew

This guy you asked about has alot of stuff like a Dynaco preamp and amp, polk center channel, polk dipole speakers,Nad amp, lots of vintage speakers (cannot remember which ones though, he has so many, lol) and lots of other stuff. I am looking to get an amp and cd player next. I had a NAD cd player I was going to get but the guy went out of town and has since changed his mind on selling it. I have been looking at an NAD 2400 amp. The amp is on hold for me till I can get it in a couple of weeks. To balance the warmness of my system out once I get the amp, I am looking for a suitable cd player in the 2-$300.00 range....used of course for me. I am actively looking for one that will suit my needs. Going to demo a Cambridge audio and maybe another this weekend. I can pick up the player on Saturday and demo it till Wednesday. Almost forgot, I am going to do nothing about the slit in the rubber surround, I am getting a woofer from a guy on here at CP to replace it. That way I know I am A ok.

Here is a short vid of my speakers in action. I also put the grills up beside the speakers to show them as well. There are a few pops and cracks in the audio but I assure you it is not coming from the speakers.
