What is this "swirling" sound in my system?

I can't figure this out...

Last week I went home to listen to my system since I bought a few new CD's and the first thing I noticed is an annoying "swirling" sound in the background. So I'm thinking something must be wrong with my setup. But then I put in an older CD such as Chris Isaak - Heart Shaped World and the noise is gone.

Back to the new CD's...on tracks such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Snow" and Nina Gordon - "Tonight and the rest of my life" I'm hearing this annoying crap in the background.

Something is wrong here but I don't know what it is!!!

Compression artifacts sound like swirling to a lot of people... Probably bad mixing & not your system.

Okay, so why doesn't this happen on the system I have at school?

My dorm setup consists of just a PC with crappy Dell speakers. I'm not having any issues with the aforementioned CD's here...

I was gonna say the same thing. Compression does sometimes have a swirling sound to it.

Your dorm setup it too crappy to hear it.

If someone tried to load Chris Issak in my CDP, especially something titled "Heart Shaped World," I'd punch them in the face. Oh wait that's right, I don't have a CDP so accidents like this can't happen. I suggest a new taste in music, your system will sound 10x better.

Ok, I'll stand up and say that Heart Shaped World is a great album. It makes my wife frisky, and... Oh yeah, great sound quality too!

On the other hand, just about all the recent Red Hot Chili Pepper albums have the reputation of being some of the worst sounding, over compressed pieces of crap ever produced. Don't get me wrong, I like the Peppers, I just wish they would do a better job mastering their albums.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Are you using those new Cyclone ICs? :D

As stated, I wouldn't worry about it. If you are able to go back to your old faves and there is not problem, no problem.

I'll second Heart Shaped Box. And as for the Chili Peppers, you can point directly to Rick Rubin for blame. He has actually gone on record in an interview with Michael Fremen that he PREFERS overcompression over preserving a recording's dynamic integrity. Seriously.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

There was a member here that thought there system was broken.
It was just a nasty POS Amy Winehouse cd. It's why many of us have
a couple of "reference" cds. IF it sounds like crud, go back and make
sure it isn't the recording. There's a lot of this "made for radio"
    stuff floating around.

Nasty POS is all you're going to get out of Amy until she goes to Rehab. :D

Rick Rubin, where else have I heard that name? Is he the guy that did the new crappy overcompressed Metallica album?
