What hz level is this?

For all of you own the transformers dvd or bluray, there's a seen in the movie just after bumble bee hands Sam the all spark during the fighting scene downtown, I think its star scream that comes flying down and shoots a missle right at the start of the slowmotion action and there is a long deep swooping bass part in the movie. I'm curious to know just how low my subs are getting at this point in the movie and if I'm hearing distorted bass because it's too low for my subs to handle(they are supposed to go flat to 23HZ) or if it's clean low bass that I can smile about?:D

I believe the Ironhide flip is somewhere in the mid 30s. Your subs should handle it fine unless there's a suckout in your room.

Are you talking bad accoustics like peaks and nulls? Also do you or anyone know of specific movie scenes that get your subs into the 20-25hz range?

I was actually worried about this the first time i saw it.... sounded a little weird on my dual S8s, so i swapped them out for the Klipsch, which automatically ramps back when it encounters distortion, and i had to get up to some serious volume before it started to level off.

I think it's just a strange sound.

Thats kind of why I'm asking...I'm trying to distinguish the difference between distorted bass and clean bass. I think it's alot easy to hear on smaller speakers other than your subs.

Take a look at the sub during that part of the movie. Is it moving unnaturally.....move in different positions when listening to the sub to see if you can hear distortion (above it, side of it, in front, back 3 feet, etc). When you are in parts of the room where it's boomy, it's going to be harder to hear distortion.

There's a ton of energy below 25hz in the WOTW pod emergence scene. There's also a ton above, so you might not notice what you're missing. The Haunting DTS has a scene called Creaking Pipes...huge door banging centered at 22hz that will peal wallpaper...it's very easy to hear a sub driven beyond it's limits for this one. Pulse, an awful movie, has a computer room scene with a continuous 18hz tone, that's very hard for most subs to handle cleanly. LOTR, the ring drop sweep gets down to 22hz, sounds like the Ironhide flip, but lower. 23hz is your 3db point, but your sub will go lower, just not with a great deal of output. It will be distorted, but you might not notice as it's close to infrasonic due to lower output and audibility.

Not really. Still the same rolloff, but you will get 3-6dbs more output. Meaning there is some subsonic stuff that becomes audible, but the higher frequencies still mask it. However, running 2 subs really takes the load off. Each is working half as hard with less distortion (if calibrated flat or close to it with the mains). The extra headroom means a considerable uptick in linearity and sound quality.

Not really sure the actual hz of the clip, but the famous "Darla" scene in Finding Nemo digs pretty darn deep.

I won't take that one beyond reference. I've still got some gas in the tank at 115dbs, but I'm scared to try Ben levels of volume. Probably couldn't get there anyway :eek:.

So you guys know, use those sine wave tones sparingly - just long enough to get a reading with a SPL meter. Sine waves, especially below 30Hz, can heat up the voice coil on a sub with a quickness. You can overheat the voice coil if you're not careful.

I'd only watch out near the port frequency. If it's tuned to 30 Hz, don't blast a 30 Hz sine wave, because that's the frequency of least cone motion.

Sealed boxes can take any frequency just fine.
