I've been happy with my Pioneer 50" plasma for quite some time but it has one deficiency, no hdmi. That means the majority of DVD's I watch (standard DVD's) cannot be upconverted. This kinda sucks because even though HD DVD is awesome the majority of material I watch is below standard.

Then I ran across the LN52A650 Samsung. It was clearly a winning picture at BB. At $2700 I couldn't quite pull the trigger, though it looked every bit as good as some much more expensive ones. Then I went to amazon and found it and a BR player for under $2200 with free shipping. I just couldn't help but to click the "add to cart" button. :D

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN52A650-52-Inch-1080p-120Hz/dp/B001413DF8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1221493859&sr=8-1

Good choice? Bad choice?

That's a great LCD. My parents just picked up the LN52A750 model off Amazon, the picture is really nice. Amazon has the best price, and even credited the CC the price difference since it dropped in price since ordered. Congrats on the purchase...

I should be getting a refurb 42" Philips LCD soon as a customer service replacement. Hopefully will be an improvement over their junky 50" plasma that apparently was defective across the entire model series.

I've never had a properly working HDTV before. Mainly because I have yet to find one that gives a decent standard picture compared to a CRT, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth.

why did you waste potential audio dough on a TV???????

must be you are still not adjusted to the altitude.

I think it may be the altitude as well since I'm not generally much of a video person. So now I have an HD plasma, an HD LCD and an HD projector. So why am I too cheap to pay for HD programming? At least I'll have a BR and an HD DVD source. I was thinking of Dish Network because it looks like they have a stand alone all HD package for $29.99. Anyone have this? The way I read it is you don't need to have some other base package to get this.

Its the interior decorator in you.

The other day I bought pillows to throw all over the bed thinking it would look good. I was fancying myself a decorator. The woman at the checkout asked me what I was going to do with them. My answer was "Uh, I don't know, why?". So much for being comfortable as a decorator...

Yea, give me 3 pkg of condoms, a 5th of Jack, two packs of cigs and, oh yea, 5 of those designer pillows. :D

    That is too funny.

By they way, let us know if that Dish all-HD package does not require any other package. I would be surprised (pleasantly) but I can't see how they would recoup their equipment money. Almost all the major channels are HD or will be by early next year so they would be effectively under-cutting their own current pricing. I have DirecTV now and would love to see it.

You could have saved a ton of money and bought a Oppo player. Do a remote hack and have the player upconvert over component.

But then again you wouldnt have that nice TV you just bought.

    Sweet TV congrats.

True, and I'm still considering it. I needed another panel anyway because I wanted one for both the livingroom and the bedroom. And 1080P 120Hz looked so good. ;) The new one goes in the livingroom but I still need to figure out how to do the hack for the old plasma in the bedroom. I forget which number oppo I have.

    madmax.

That was a great purchase. I have been comparing the samsung toc series, to the pioneer kuros and xbr from sony. Maybe I am biased, but I found the samsung lcd to be extremely pleasing. I am normally a hater of samsung products ahem, their cell phones, however I was too impressed I had to get a samsung lcd as well, the 52 inch like yours.

I could never get into standard definition tv but today you can get some pretty HD special stuff at a reasonable price and I'm getting hooked on it.

Just thought I would report back after receiving the Samsung LCD and BR player. WOW! Need I say more?

The good is that playing a BR disc or even an upconverted DVD on this setup is far better than than anything I've seen

The bad is the sound from the built in speakers isn't so good. Who cares anyway...

That's what I have, I think it's $55 after all the fees (extra receivers, no phoneline charge etc). CineMAX is included for "free".

Oh, and congrats on the new TV for the OP to stay IT. :)
