I was wondering if anyone here works with/has experience with home surveillance systems.

We want to buy a baby monitor and were looking at this one:

Seems like a decent unit. However, as I was searching for baby monitors, home surveillance cameras also came up which got me thinking: Maybe I can also get a basic system w/a DVR to keep an eye on the house when not home. What is a good brand? Does anyone personally use wireless cameras outdoors? So far, I heard mixed reviews about wireless. Most wireless negative reviews mention interference and poor nighttime video.

I saw a few wired systems that seemed ok (decent specs) on Amazon.
For example, this wired system has a dvr and 4 cameras. The dvr also has a usb to transfer data from the dvr to a computer:

Thanks

Yes, I personally use the higher-end cameras from Sony and Security Labs in my own house, and they work great. I prefer wired over wireless due to the reliability and also the picture quality.

From what I heard, break-ins in Long Island are at an alarming rate, so the first thing we did when we moved in was to install a NEW security system and add cameras around the house.

if you're considering outdoor use make sure your light levels will be within spec of whatever camera you buy!

For baby monitors we went with this one.

Just get ready for those green little eyes looking at you when it's night time, your child isn't sleeping and they are staring at the camera. It's kind of weird and cool all at the same time.
I know just enough to be dangerous, but don't tell my wife, she thinks I'm a genius. :D
