Well, our house will be done in another couple of weeks (reconstruction going on from the fire set by "Johnny Torch"), so we're all camping out at the daughter and SIL's in a room in their refinished basement.

It's all good.

Well, I woke up this morning to hear a voice in the basement offering the opinion,

"AWWWWWW, $$$$HHHEEEEYYYIITTT !!

Stepped out of bed and .... my feet were wet.

Loooong story short, 7" of rain in 6 hours will kind of flood out the local storm creeks, overload the local Metropolitan Sewer District pumping stations, and start backing up the sewer systems into houses.

Weeeee !

Thanks, Hurricane Ike ! Way to back up precipitation all the way to the Midwest.

Jammed a 2" PVC pipe into their 4" basement drain (where all the water was backing up) with some rags to act as a stand pipe and ran up to Lowes and Home Depot for supplies.

EVERY 4" test drain plug was out (at 7 am) so .... got a 20 gallon wet/dry vac with a pump on it and spent the morning pumping out their basement.

"Luckily", the major roads around here got flooded, commercial businesses got flooded, so the area is sure to be declared a Disaster Area so that'll help eliminate the "Sorry, you're not covered by Acts of God" with their insurance company.

Pretty cool, watching the beavers and ..... I'm pretty sure otters swimming around in the lake that's now behind their house. We were going to break open my grandson's "Snoopy" fishing pole and go fishing, but ..... well, ..... we do have some couth. That and it only has 4 pound test line on it. And we couldn't find the hooks. :o

Held the damage to about 4"; their neighbors had 6 feet, but they're at a little lower elevation.

I'm getting a free Big Mac and large fry out of this.

So, out of bad comes good. :)

It's all good.

.....except the Rams are getting their arses kicked.

Come to think of it, though ..... that's a good thing, too !

:)

I've come down our stairs in the am to feel that wet splash. It's not cool at all.

Ours was a polybutyl pipe burst (3 times). I hope you can get all your problems resolved as easily as we did, we just had to replumb the entire house (free under the pb pipe suit).

Good to see you all are taking it in stride. Stay dry.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

It's great that you see the good in what most people would declare a "bad" situation. Enjoy the Big Mac!

Just got done using the binoculars to watch a lone heron standing on the "bank", waiting for trapped fish to collect in the receding water.

Sky was clear, some real nasty looking clouds coming in, more rain called for, so .... time for a trip to Lowes.

I ate my grandson's French Fries. :o Hey, you snooze, you lose !

In the Midwest, Chicago/Milwaukee area. Always carry the sewer backup rider on your home owners ins. It only costs $5-20 depending on if you choose the $5k personal property rider or the $10k Structural, major appliance/furnace option. It's worth it. In '99 I had 12" of sewer backup and in '00 I had 26", from rains like these we just had. '00 was the year I peeked around the corner at the bottom of the stairs and saw my original Monitor 10's floating,.....made me cry. The ins company will also generally pay for Servicemaster or such to clean and sanatize without counting against the limit. They'll also generally waive the deductable and tack on 5% too.
If there ain't no gold at the end of the rainbow, I'll settle for the pot.:D
