SDA 1C Problems

Hello all,

Let me just say I am beyond frustrated. I'm a systems design Engineer for a software company, yet I can't seem to figure out my Polk SDA 1C's, and the wiring schematics I have. I have owned these speakers for going on 8 years. The first 2 years were nothing short of orgasmic when it came to listening to these speakers. However, The last years have been beyond frustrating. My left channel just flat out will no longer play on the stereo set. Everything comes out the array. I believe I have checked the wiring, and everything looks correct? I have also pulled both crossovers, and looked them over. Let me just say I am a Volt Meter Idiot. I look at these diagrams, and I flat out don't understand. I have also downloaded the test sheet, but it's all Greek to me. I need help. I'm sure this is something so simple. there has to be either a basic wiring mix up, or my cross over has gone bad. HELP! PLEASE! I just want my speakers back.

Regards,

Brian:confused:

Just curious, what are you driving them with?

sda's require a common ground amp. If yours isn't then this may be the source of your problem or contributed to it.

The m200t is a common ground amp, that's not the issue.

So, there is NO sound coming out of the left channel other than what's in the SDA drivers?

If you swap the L/R channels, for example swapping the left and right speaker around...is the speaker still dead?

To go out on a limb, I'm going to say it's a dead channel rather than a bad speaker. I can't see ALL of the drivers, save the arrays, crapping at once.

I've had this happen once before, twice actually, once it was a dead amp channel and the other was a bad interconnect cable. Just take it a step at a time to isolate the issue, start with the simple stuff first.

so if you remove the SDA cable... none of the drivers in the left speaker work? yeah do what TroyD says and swap the speaker cables. then see if it starts working again. try a different amp or receiver.

    Hi all,

Let me give some more detail. All the sound in the left speaker comes out of the dem. array. It doesn't matter if the interconnect cable is connected, or disconnected, I only get sound from the outside pair. The Amp is in good working order, as I can hook them up to a set of Cerwin Vegas I have without issue.

It seems like my crossover may have an issue. I will also say that I made the mistake of letting a friend look at the crossover when the problem first started.

Looking is fine, but did he touch it with a soldering iron?

You know he did. I do have a slodering iron, as well as a volt meter. But I am far from an expert. Do you think this is something I can tackle as far as troubleshooting the connections. I also wonder if through all the troubleshooting, I have just connected some of the internal wirining incorrectly?

I will elaborate a bit more. The right channel works fine both with the stereo, and dem drivers. I.E. if I turn the balance all the way left, I hear sound from the right dem array. If I turn the balance all the way right, I hear sound from the right stereo array.

On the Left channel it does not matter which direction the balance is turned, I only get sound from the left dem array.

yeah you're going to need a schematic of the SDA 1C to figure out the wiring if your friend jacked the crossover(s).

sounds like your LEFT stereo driver is bad is all to me.. remove it and hook it up directly to your speaker wires at a low volume and see if it's working.. that's the only sure way to tell.. putting your ear up to it while still in the cabinent won't work as the other driver makes it seem like both are working.

I would agree that it sounds like a stereo driver problem, however if that were the case, when I turned the balance all the way to the left I would not/should not hear anything from the left Dem array. At least thats my understanding of how they work. The only time I should hear anything from the left array is when the balance is turned all the way to the right.
