Looking to replace Velodyne CHT-12 with Hsu or SVS

I currently have a Velodyne CHT-12 but I am considering replacing it with a Hsu or SVS. My room is 19x16x10. SVS recommended their biggest subwoofer for this room, which seems like overkill.

What do you guys recommend? I don't have any set budget yet but cost will be a factor. I'd like to have more musicaility than what my CHT-12 offers, but need it to be DEEP and LOUD for movies :D

Not one of the ones you mentioned, but the MFW-15 will fit your bill quite nicely!

I had an SVS sub (very good by the way) but have since changed up & went with a Velodyne SPL-1200R. After hearing the Velo, for me there's no going back to SVS. An SPL or DD series from Velodyne will keep you content & happy for a long time.

IMO, I don't think there are to many 15 inch subs that are musical. They are too big and don't respond fast enough (missing that tight punchy bass).

If I were you, I would go with a Velo SPL1000R

The only reason SVS would recommend the Ulta would be you stressed you wanted the best. All their subs are very good. A PB12NSD would be plenty for your room. Also, larger quality ported subs are very efficient with a profound bottom kick, but very musical if properly calibrated. The MFW 15 and Epik Knight are great examples. Velo makes nice subs too and for a music application, they are hard to beat because they are so controlled, but even the DDs can't hang with the big boys for HT. I've had the DD15 in here and have heard the 18 many times. Great subs, but the servo severly limits output below 30hz in comparison to the other top subs on craigsub's list.

that MFW-15 looks very nice and is priced right. Is it actually pretty musical?

The site is down right now, but Craig's sub evaluation is on one of the forums at...

    www.tweakcityaudio.com/forum

it may still be posted at av123 as well...it's been pulled from AVS.

Craig, love him or hate him, is a very knowledgeble guy and before he went into business, he rated about 30 subs. The MFW 15 is up near the top. Read the thread and get his comments. Most folks that own them agree. The MFW is a powerful and musical sub with strong midbass impact for a reasonable price. Seaton designed it.

I suspect the Epik Knight or Caliber are every bit as good, if not better (though bigger). At least Chad Kuypers seems to think so and he builds them. He has done an A/B he tells me.

I am no expert, but to answer your question: yes, imo. If you are considering getting one, I would definitely suggest posting on the AV123 forum asking for a demo in your area. The community is pretty strong there and I'm sure someone will step up and give you a listen.

As Ron said, there are other great options like Epik. Others include eD, SVS, HSU, etc. But, the MFW-15 is an excellent sub!

I have had subs from Sunfire; Paradigm, Mirage, Velodyne, and Boston and have never owned an SVS. I have heard an SVS and can say that SVS will be my next sub. For the money there is no question. I currently own a Paradigm Reference servo and the SVS blows it away.

SVS all the way, followed by Epik. They both make excellent subs, the PB13U would kill your room. Or you could go with dual PB12 Plus's

SVS products are in transition. I don't think you'll be seeing anymore /2s. This is a guess, not knowledge. Should be hearing some news shortly.
