Something like that.. forgive my inability to draw with text.

We're getting the pottery barn Logan Media Suite Cabinet for the 52" LCD.

My wife despises floor speakers and would prefer not to ever see them. So i can tuck shelf front speaker and a center into the cabinet. But what i'm wondering is.. which series to use.. and could I use in-wall/ceiling speakers for the rear 2 channels or am i limited to in-wall speakers for all of it except center due to size restrictions on the cabinet?

I've been reading a good deal of these forums and I think most people on here are more of an enthusiast than I am, therefore more educated already. is there a polk series that won't BREAK the bank that would give me good reproduction and an aesthetic that my wife wouldn't mind? And based on the series recommendation.. is there a good sub that would be appropriate for my room size?

Your help is always appreciated :)

~Jake

Just for one data point, here is the system I put together along with a couple of pics:

    Front: CSi5
    L/R: RTi6
    Surr L/R: TC-615i
    Surr back L/R: TC-615i
    Sub: HSU VTF-2 MK3

My room is around 13 x 20 as I recall, and has a vaulted ceiling that opens into the kitchen, so it's roughly comparable to your situation. Powered by an Onkyo TX-SR705, it is quite a nice system, although the AVR could use a bit more power.

Our cabinets were custom, but the one you pointed out does come in similar shapes, so you could arrange the speakers like I have them. I assume you would wall mount the TV so the center speaker could sit under it.

As you can see we went with the in-walls at the back and sides so we can walk around the room without getting hit in the face by the speakers. I was concerned how they would sound with the rest of the system, but I have to say I am really impressed. They match the sound perfectly with the fronts.

I can't recall exactly what I paid for each speaker, but I believe all the speakers plus the sub was around $1200. It was all purchased new, but I got decent deals on the in-walls ($50 each from Fry's) and I think I got the RTi6s for a better than average price. I'm sure you can do better if you're patient or willing to go used.

if youre building this home, and cant do a dedicated theater room. I'd plan for a two-sytem. You can use LCD screen for day time viewing, then at night you could have an electric screen come out of ceiling and pair that up with a nice projector. Since youre building you'll definitely have time on your side to get the items needed to do so. Something else to consider since youre building. Even if you were to go with a cabinet type design as shown above, you could have your screen drop down dead center, mount your projector back to give you the ideal size pic you want and enjoy. Ive seen many of setups like that here in japan due to size and they look awesome.

52" LCD, receiver Onkyo TX-SR706, and Sony Blu-Ray are already purchased. Budget for the rest is not more than 2 grand. Which series of speaker to achieve good sound reproduction is my question.

Will 2 Shelf fronts, a center, and in wall/ceiling rears make me compromise badly? End up with a bad matching?

When we built our house it was actually less expensive to have a custom cabinet made than to go buy a pre-made.. I was able to hide my rti12's and run everything in cable channels behind the cabinet and into the basement.

Why not in walls all the way around? Since your building from scratch you could install the recommended enclosures before the rock goes up.

Martin Logan Spire, 2 JL Audio F112 subs
McIntosh C1000 Controller with Tube pre amp, 2 MC501 amplifiers, MD1K Transport & DAC, MR-88 Tuner
WireWorld Eclipse 6.0 speaker wire and jumpers, Eclipse 5^2 Squared Balanced IC's. Silver Eclipse PCs (5)
Symposium Rollerblocks 2+ (16)Black Diamond Racing Mk 3 pits (8)

GlennJames that is a nice, clean setup. Where is the sub?

In the second photo, see how the couch is longer than the row of cabinets that are behind it? The sub is behind the couch there. Even with a concrete slab floor, we REALLY feel the base.

When I was setting up the system, I figured it would go there or at the other end of the couch between it and the recliner. Since I only had one chance to run the sub cable, I put enough length in so it could go in either position. Once of these days I might move it to the other spot just to see how it sounds.

Yessir. I read your reply.. and appreciate it. That is a good looking setup for sure. Was just asking for some more opinions. The reason why I was thinking shelf speakers for the front is because my wife won't budge on the pottery barn cabinet and I thought the in-walls would look awkward set behind the cabinet. If they are on the wall and the cabinet is anywhere near in-the-way then it would interfere with the projection angles of the speakers.

I like Glenn's setup.. if he thinks the speakers are producing great theater sound, then i would very likely match the speakers about the same way he did.

    Thanks for your input :)

    OK, just checking ;)

You should look up the sizes of the speakers you will be getting. The CSi5 center is *huge*. The width is easy enough to see from the photos (I've got a 52" TV as well), but the depth isn't obvious. It is quite deep along with the bookshelf speakers.

As you can probably tell by the number of posts, I'm very new to this stuff, so you should stick around for some more opinions. Once you start deciding on the exact speakers and sub, post again for more advice.

Once you do get the setup in place, I suggest putting in the Blu-Ray of "Cars" and watching the opening scene. It's my new favorite to demo the system to friends, and they are always impressed!
