I recently purchased a pair of RTi70's and a PsW350.
The instructions for the PSW350 are rather vague as to using the "controls" on the back of the sub-woofer.
Does anyone have any guidelines or rules of thumb for setting the volume. etc. to go along with the "by ear"approach?

You really shouldn't need to go past 12 o'clock on the volume for the sub. You should have an even balance between the sounds of the speakers and the sub, not overpowering bass. Hope that helps.
