I need to buy an I-POD thing for my grandaughter, she is seven. Nothing fancy, I have no idea about these devices, I only want to spend 50 to 75 max, so any input on one that will fit her needs, she will just need to download and copy CD to it, since she is seven she listens to mostly female artists and those young boy bands.

The only Ipods you will be able to touch for under $100 are the Nano and the Shuffle.

Shuffle is smaller, flash memory based (ie: no hard drive), but they also don't have a display to see what is playing. These are basically for jogging, etc. I probably wouldn't recommend that for your niece.

The Nano is a smaller version of the Ipod. It has a small display to see what is playing and select songs. That is what I'd recommend.

Check out the Apple Refurb store. That is probably the only place you will find them in your price range. I'd say to get at least 4GB, which will hold about 500-800 songs in MP3 format (depending on length/compression).

    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?sf=wHF2F2PHCCCX72KDY&nclm=FD5142C7

If Ipods are too pricey, check out a Zen from Creative. They tend to be more affordable, but I can't comment on their functionality/reliability. You'd have to do some research in that dept.

I have a shuffle (and a 80G Classic) and for a young child, I would recommend to go with a Nano for the same reasons as billbillw has mentioned (primarily the display and the ability to scroll to the song(s) she wants. I have purchased a couple of refurb iPods from Apple for my kids. They look brand new, worked perfectly and the warranty is nearly as good as the new.

As far as buying another brand. Trust me...for a 7 year old...the indoctrination is already there. Anything else is NOT an iPod and she will be probably be disappointed if she doesn't get one if that is what she wants. At this point in her life she is not to the point of being able to discern between an iPod and something "just as good or better". I know...we should be able to teach them the idea of value over "name brand" but from experience that is a difficult task at this age (and in reality the iPod probably is a "better" product than the competition - pricey yes- but probably better).

Apple is announcing new iPod line today, so the existing iPods will go on sale now and you will able to buy a new one much cheaper. Look for the deals in next couple of weeks.

Yep! What is the world coming to...you can even run Windows on a Mac. I know this because my oldest has to have Windows on her MacBook Pro to run AutoCad and **** about it all the time.

Yes, all of the Ipods work with PC.

Be aware that they have multiple 'generations' for these things. I'd stick with the current generation for the Nano.

BTW, the Apple Refurb store pricing/availability change frequently. When I was looking earlier, they had a Refurb, current generation 4GB Nano for $99. The store is down right now, so this may change (or they may have a better deal) when it comes back up.

Just remember Nano, 4GB or greater. Current generation, and stick with the refurb store.

EDIT: If what Izafar said is true. I'd hold off a week or two and see what the prices do. You may find that clearance pricing on new (not Refurb) units drops drastically and may drop the the same price as a refurb. I've seen this happen before.

I dont know ted, I got one and you'd be surprised how well it sounds.

I use a pair of Rogers Monitors with it, not the stock speakers (never tried them). An old CAL cd player sounds exquisite with it, with the ipod itself being not to shabby

From looking, that is another 'new generation' of the Nano with 8GB pricing the same as previous Gen's 4GB. That means that this morning's 'current gen' is now the 'last gen'. I would expect significant discounts on remaining inventory of the 'last gen'.

Sorry this is so confusing Ted.

I like the idea of the new Nano's, but not enough to rush out and replace mine.

And yeah, I expect to see the old generation prices significantly reduced.

The Nano's are solid state-no Hard drive. They don't hold as much as the hard drive, but how much music can a 7 year old possibly have anyway. My wife has a Nano and lots of music and is very happy with it.
Personally, for a youth, I would stick with the SS unit (Nano) -its more durable than one with a hard drive.
The shuffles are good if you want very simple load and go. No song browsing type stuff--You load it with the stuff you want to hear (a playlist) and go. Great for joggers, etc that just want to treach up and hit pause or next etc.
If you're neice doesn't care to browse...but just play...

Just to establish, I-Pods are overhyped and overpriced. Sold my broken 30G fifth generation for $80 on eBay two months ago. Silly.

Sure, an 80G device with properly ripped songs that can drive a party via a stereo connection is pretty sweet. But, if you're throwing the party, just use CDs, which sound better. If you're not throwing the party and your 80G is standing in, someone will steal it.

Buy an older 8G or 4G Nano for $50, give it to your granddaughter and walk away. She'll be using her phone as an MP3 player in a year anyway.

Other Mac products like this MacBook are - in my opinion - better investments or gifts.

EFanning, The OPs request was for an iPod or similar device for his grandaughter to use, he did not request commentary on the iPod's existence.

Are you suggesting that his grandaughter just use CDs for when she is throwing a party?

A Macbook for a 7 year old? Are you serious?

Stick to the intention of the thread.

Wal-Mart sells iPods and all of the other reputable brands. Not that you need to shop there, but it's a good place to check them out. If an iPod is too expensive (and they probably are for a gift for a 7 year old) any of the other brands of MP3 players will suffice.

I personally prefer the iPods. I still have my original of 4 years and use it almost daily.

Well with the new I-pod Nano's and prices announced I was hoping to see the older 4G Nano models drop in price. You know the wife and I actually considered a phone with mp-3 to add to our plan for her (it was the first thing she wanted), but its just a bit over the top and the cell companies really do not have plans catered to control the potential misuse by a 7 year old, so that idea has hit the skids.

I did go by Wal-Mart and saw they have Zune and even Sony Walkman, now there is a name that is a blast from the past. I suspect Shack may be correct, she did not ask for a Zune or a Walkman, she asked for an I-pod (2nd choice after the phone) which may indicate the grouped adolescense mentality, now some of you fellows are looking at the practical aspect of this as a parent and I understand, I however am a Grand-Parent and spoiling my Grandchildren is my reward in life for not killing their parent when he was a teenager. So I have decided to get her a Nano and if I get the urge even one of the tube players and some Polk's, because:

    Tubes Rule.

    Thanks for the help.

    Ted,
If you have a little time to spare, I would wait. They will have to drop the prices on that last generation of Nanos. Nobody will buy last gen 8GB for the same price as new gen 8GB. It will happen. Just give it a week or two (if you have the time).

Well, they have not dropped the price, I talked with the nice lady at Apple, she admits it makes no sense showing as the same price right now for each generation and as Bill suggests the price of the 3rd gen will have to come down.

So my little loved one gets an upgrade from the get go, one nice thing is Apple will engrave a message to her from me on the back of the Ipod.

Thanks again for the help guys.

It plays videos and movies too. So she can put her favorite shows or movies, or perhaps hme movies on there as well.
I'm sure you know that already, but figured I'd mention it.
