hi, i sold an amp in good working condition, when he got it, it was hooked up and played at 3/4 max volume, sounded great for about 30 min and then blew a fuse (left channel only). now it blows fuses instantly (left channel) without anything even connected to it. who is liable? i plan on working with the buyer to resolve the issue either way. i'm just curious as to what you guys think.
thanks, vic

Well, the amp could have been damaged in shipping. Have you had him switch speakers
and speaker cables to see if the right channel fuse blows?

I think if it worked for 30 minutes, it wasn't damaged in shipping and numbnuts just blew up his brand spankin' new amp. His problem. If you help him out, he owes you a favor.

yes, with nothing connected if he replaces the fuse and then turns it on it blows within about 10sec. (left channel only)

It's never a good idea to have nothing connected. 3/4 max volume? Why so high? Speaker impedance? Amp capability?

Well, that's definitely the amp. Ouch.

My advice? If you trust that the seller knows how to correctly hook an amp up, then make right on the sale. If it's a zit-poppin' teen that has to ask how to bridge after he tells you that the amp has issues? Well, I think you are big enough to figure that one out.

Sorry, never encountered that kind of deal before.

If the speaker terminals were shorted even by one small strand that could blow an output device which would cause the same thing you are describing. If the amp has a soft start circuit this could be the reason for it blowing. What kind of amp, and where is he?

I think its good of you to even thinking about helping the guy out. Have him take it to a repair shop or send it in for an estimate, then if you really want to be nice, pay a fraction of the cost. Odds are he/she did something to it, not really on you.

3/4 volume? 10 to 1 that's the problem right there.

I think Ben hit it on the nose, one tiny little strand from HIS hookup could have blown one of the output devices and turned the functioning amp into a broken one. The fact that it worked at 3/4 volume for 30 minutes THEN went ....should relieve you of any responsibility.

Make sure you let him know what Ben's favorite drink of choice is before leaving to take the amp :)
